Who are your role models? Be they real people, fictional characters, or books. Where do you draw your wisdom from?

I’ll start. I enjoy Star Trek. A lot of the episodes have a deeper meaning, a moral lesson for those who have ears to hear.

Thomas Sowell, That man is a genius.

Who gives you wisdom/ who are your role models?

Interestingly enough, I don’t think I ever had a role model. Maybe that’s the cause of some of my problems.
I was a wiz kid growing up and everyone used to point at me and use me as an example every other kids should aspire to be. Kids hated me for it, and I hated myself for it. So I started developing my bad boy side trying to fit in with the cool kids.
Everyone kept telling me that only sky was the limit for me, so I grew up believing in myself too much and didn’t really look up to anyone.
I don’t think I was a narcissist, but some people thought I was, so I got used to handicapping myself.
And now at 36 I’m someone who others might call a loser.
Maybe that’s in part because how I was treated growing up and didn’t have a role model.
I was a botan, but always wanted to be a punk anarchist thug kind of guy. So I f~~~ed my life up big time

After thinking about it, couple of names come to my mind:
Bruce Lee (when I was a kid) and Adrian Peterson (lately)

My Role Models that are real:

Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, Linus Torvalds, Stephen Hawkings, Neil Degrassi Tyson.

    Role Models that are fictional:

Captain America, Iron Man, Black Panther, Spiderman, Loki, The Hulk, and plenty of anime characters I’m not going to list because it would just be too long of a list.

My role models are the men I met and knew throughout my life, a good number of them are/were WWII combat vets! One of my favorites was a southern man like Smitty, or C-Pig, he had the biggest heart of any man I know, he was my second father growing up, he made me feel like I mattered.

Another guy is a Lithuanian I worked for/with, the most mild mannered man I ever met, I told him (after a problematic customer) that I was p~~~ed off enough for the both of us! I learned how to be calm cool and collected from him.

Another guy was mafioso, he taught me respect (no s~~~) punctuality, and how important your word is, plus how to hustle your ass for a dollar!

And mostly my dad, he was for the most part like a true friend, plus he let me drive him home starting at age 14 after the guys were drinking at the shop on Saturday afternoon. He taught me how to learn most the skills I have by having me do dangerous work in spite of being a minor, he treated us like men, like John Wayne would treat a kid! Plus growing up and having a full service auto and motor coach facility at my disposal was awesome!
To the average kid with a pair of vice grips, screwdriver, and aerosol spray paint; I was f~~~in NASA, jet propulsion laboratory, and GM all rolled up into one! I was building and flying models by age 15, Driving my own repaired car and towing cars by age 16.

I guess all my role models were real life men, they meant the most to me!

As far as whom do I admire?

    #1 John Wayne.
    #2 Clint Eastwood.
    #3 Robert Redford.
    #4 Humphrey Bogart.

    Real people;

    #1 Wiston Chirchell.
#2 Bob/Evil Knevel (I met him and talked in person @ riverside).
    #3 Thomas Paine
    #4 Thomas Jefferson.
#5 Barack Obama! Just f~~~in with ya!

There’s not too many real people I like…

The only men I’ve actually known that I really looked up to and admired, was a boss and a co-worker I had when I worked for the Arizona chapter of The Nature Conservancy. Stellar human beings, these two men/scientists/conservationists; one older than me and one younger.

Dave Chappelle is one of my heroes. Never afraid to be honest or controversial and always hilarious whilst doing it.

Richard Dawkins is another one of my role models. He’s stood up against the insane arguments of religion for years. Respect him due to the sheer amount of s~~~ he gets, but does not change him at all.

Roger Federer is my sporting idol. Incredibly talented, greatest player of all time and a class act.

I kinda side with Russky in that I don’t think I could name many role models really. That’s not to say that I don’t admire what people have accomplished or what they have stood for, just that behind every man there are some flaws, some of the major. I don’t want to put them on a pedestal, nor tear them down. I just want to honor what they did and try and learn from it.

For example, Einstein is quoted as saying that ‘Imagination is more important then intelligence’. That means a lot coming from him.

I also believe most of the great things that men do are not in the spotlight and they never get any credit for it. Those deeds are no less praiseworthy then the deeds we’ve all heard about.

    Ok. Then do it.

Having role models has a bad aura of cult of personality. And growing up in USSR – I was trying to avoid that like plague. It’s not a certain persona I was admiring, but certain qualities that I wanted to develop myself: Perseverance, emotional resilience, dedication, all-in attitude, eyes sparkling with inspiration, imagination and convincing belief of future greatness. Bruce Lee was probably the closest person to fit that description – I watched his movies and read his quotes, and had a poster on the wall, but it wasn’t like he was my role model.
But this is just me, maybe I had more role models it would had been beneficial to character development in younger years

At one point Henry Rollins was a huge influence on me in many ways. He opened me up to writing in a different and more powerful way. As I grew older though I started to realize how much of a mangina he can be, a complete PC f~~~.

In general I tend to like people who speak their minds, and are strong enough to be themselves rather than go with the flow to make their lives easier.

I wouldn’t say I have role models in the strictest sense of the word though, more influences. At the end of the day no one is perfect and if you start modeling yourself after someone you start to see a lot of faults that you can do without copying.
