Can any of you guys recomend a good scotch or bourbon. Preferably something smooth.

Yes, I can. Whenever I feel some self love, I buy me a bottle of Lagavulin. It’s got a deep peaty, smokey flavour. Treat yourself, it’s expensive, but you won’t regret it.
I am not really in to peat, but maybe I lack experience.

Scotch: Crown Royal and Johnny Walker (in no particular order). These are both blended scotches; single malts are another whole field.
Brandy: Presidente (a product of Mexico). Give it a try!
American sippin’ whiskey: Jack Daniels (my first choice) and Jim Beam (after a shot or two, who’s arguing about the difference, if any?).
Red wine, which is mostly all I drink these days. My distilled spirits days are behind me.

Ever tried Merlot Dark Horse?

instead of Scotch, you might want to give “Jamesons” (irish) a try. Just for a beginning.
A major factor is the barrel the good stuff has been matured in (wheter it was a former “port” (oak – darker color) or “burbon”-barrel (american pine, lighter color, usually indicator of rougher taste)).
Go to a local shop, there are specialists nearly everywhere. Ask for a scotch seminar, costs 60 to 120 and serves you at least 5 different kinds with full back story.
general rule of thumb: “the darker, the smoother and sweeter”."Him, who delights in solitude, is either a wild beast or a GOD!" - Aristotle (Aristot. Pol. 1.1253a) 1 Hom. Il. 9.63; the passage goes on: ἐστὶν ἐκεῖνος ι ὃς πολέμου ἔραται.
