I will not attack or attempt to degrade the women paying alimony in this video. It sucks for anybody to have to do it.

Women have been proliferating the scourge of alimony for decades. Now it is negatively impacting them.

Alimony in Michigan is gender neutral. Women who make more than their soon to be ex-husbands have to pay. It’s not discretionary and judges must order it if the length of the marriage meets the criteria.

Alimony is ridiculous no matter who pays it. I could see why it was needed when women were married at 18, had a kid by 19, and 5 by the time they hit 30, then their husband leaves them when they are 40 after never having had time for higher education or to develop any marketable skills because they were laying mom to a large family during an era where most women didn’t hold full time jobs outside of the household.

But today the average marriage age is pushing 30. The idea that you could marry at 30, have a relatively short marriage with no kids, then owe alimony because you make more is just ridiculous. Being married to a high earner should simply be a perk of the marriage, not a payday for divorcing.

Sadly though, I don’t think it will ever go away. They might get rid of “alimony,” but we still get left in a position where women get preferential treatment when it comes to custody of children, so instead of owing maybe 500 a month for child support and 500 for alimony, you’d just end up owing 1000 a month for child support…which is another f~~~ed up thing. Why does it apparently cost more to raise a kid simply because you earn more? If I had a kid and got a promotion with a 20,000 dollar raise, I’m not going to say woohoo, I can buy my kid a ton of extra s~~~ with that money…its going straight towards retirement savings or a mortgage or something…yet when the court sees that money they just say look what he makes lets rape him with child support!

Very true, I work with a nurse who has to pay her ex-spouse alimony since she is the one making a lot more money. I worked with her ex also, many years ago, and from what she tells me it’s been quite a while since he’s had a job. I feel a bit bad for her as she’s always been nice to me. The Divorce Courts need a complete overhaul.
