I don’t think women think about the actual definition when they make that statement. I would hazard a guess that they believe it means that they aren’t taking direction from someone else, or that they hold the attitude of independence. It’s more how they see themselves then what reality is.

My ex wants told me once (while we we’re married) that she was a ‘free spirit’. My first reaction was “what does that mean? why did you get married and have kids?”. When women say this, all I can think is, be careful what you wish for, because you are getting it. Good men are walking away from the bad deal that society has become for men.
