I used Ubuntu over a year ago.

I have looked at the distro timeline, studied the history of it and I am overwhelmed.

I use Adobe products, and currently run windows 10 and have built a powerful workstation.

I was looking into hosting my own website instead of paying with Apache server just to see if I can transfer DNS names.

I want to learn to code scripts to create software that I see online as SASS and work with API’s and windows 10 is not suitable for that.

I would like to dual boot if possible..

Should I goto the trouble with Archlinux? It seems to me that if I were to use ubuntu I would be better off learning Debian right? Go upstream?

Anybody know how to fix wordpress themes that rank low in googlepage speed insights? Whatever linux distro is most closely associated with this apache module?

I’m exhausted from reading about SEO, SPA’s, angularjs, material design, and everything getting a general overview. I found a theme I really enjoy but out of the box I am scoring 68/100

DO NOT use Ubuntu with Unity. Unity has a phone home function similar to OS X and Micro$oft Windows. I use Xubuntu and it works great. Has all the features of Ubuntu, without the phone home back door garbage.

He meant Unity as the Desktop Environment. Totally a different thing. You can also try Ubuntu Mate.

As an option , you might wanna take a look at OpenShift https://www.openshift.com as a service to test your apps before deploying them into your own server.

"We didn't start the fire. It was always burning. Since the world's been turning" "A world that vilifies men only breeds a generation of men that feel no empathy towards women" “In a woman’s mind , there is really no such thing as a ‘we’. In her eyes, earth allways revolves around her, not the other way around. So thinking that your needs , aspirations or desires are valid enough to be persued, or even that you are entitled achive such goals, is like asking your boss for a pay rise in your very first day at the job.”

Thanks guys… I used the namecheap resgistrar because it was the cheapest one I could find and hostgator…

but now I am starting to think that I am getting screwed. I have to “purchase” an SSL certificate… and from what I have been reading about encrypting and how it works… it just seems like a technical monopoly on technology. 31 bucks a year then goto 250 for ecommerce..?? It’s just another layer of encryption… I mean seriously that’s like me selling you on a security system that gives you a padlock…. but then for 200 dollars more puts another lock on that lock.

Am I wrong here or is this just paying for an extra 188 dollars for doing the same thing twice?

Hostgator runs on centos linux and namecheap uses cloud linux… Maybe I should head over to those forums and start nosing around.

I was looking at debian because why not just take the 5 computers I have and throw together a beowulf server? And really… a VPS you share the resources… so I’m looking at the specs and just thinking of why I couldn’t do this myself.

I read this and the history of linux… I dislike SASS but probably will appreciate it when I create something myself…

This is why I choose to avoid Ubuntu ^

    Ubuntu GNU/Linux

Ubuntu provides specific repositories of nonfree software, and Canonical expressly promotes and recommends nonfree software under the Ubuntu name in some of their distribution channels. Ubuntu offers the option to install only free packages, which means it also offers the option to install nonfree packages too. In addition, the version of Linux, the kernel, included in Ubuntu contains firmware blobs.

The “Ubuntu Software Center” lists proprietary programs and free programs jumbled together. It is hard to tell which ones are free since proprietary programs for download at no charge are labelled “free”.

Since October 2012, Ubuntu sends personal data about users’ searches to a server belonging to Canonical, which sends back ads to buy things from Amazon. This does not, strictly speaking, affect whether Ubuntu is free software, but it is a violation of users’ privacy. It also encourages buying from Amazon, a company associated with DRM as well as mistreatment of workers, authors and publishers.

This adware is one of the rare occasions in which a free software developer persists in keeping a malicious feature in its version of a free program.

Ubuntu appears to permit commercial redistribution of exact copies with the trademarks; removal of the trademarks is required only for modified versions. That is an acceptable policy for trademarks. The same page, further down, makes a vague and ominous statement about “Ubuntu patents,” without giving enough details to show whether that constitutes aggression or not.

That page spreads confusion by using the misleading term “intellectual property rights”, which falsely presumes that trademark law and patent law and several other laws belong in one single conceptual framework. Use of that term is harmful, without exception, so after making a reference to someone else’s use of the term, we should always reject it. However, that is not a substantive issue about Ubuntu as a GNU/Linux distribution.

Totally interesting topic! I’m paying close attention and taking notes.

    <rant>

I am in a double bind. I need to download and run programs that are designed to run on Windows 10 or Apple’s latest OS (whatever it’s named this month). At the same time, I am totally tired of their bulls~~~: “You need to buy the latest upgrade. Never mind that your current platform is too limited in processing power and memory to run it. You need to upgrade that too!”

I have used Ubantu in the old days, but with results that can best be described as partially satisfactory. I had to go back to (ick!) Windows (ick again!) in order to make my life run smoothly.

Thus, and therefore, any and all suggestions are totally welcome!
