Why do you think they are a bad idea?

Well look at the way it fights back against the human.

I guess it must just be that as I’m an engineer I find it very cool indeed.

Needs some jetpacks and weapons before I’d be entirely happy.

It’s not fighting the human. It’s adapting to changing conditions in order to complete it’s assigned task. You can’t see the value in that?

This is one of the biggest issues with computer programs, and thus robots. You have to tell them how to respond to every possible situation. Of course, life isn’t predictable, and thus a program/robot will fail when it faces a situation you didn’t predict and program it to respond to.

As far as application, I doubt they are thinking of using it an environment where it can inadvertently harm humans. Perhaps it can be used to perform manual labor tasks. Or maybe military operations where drones aren’t possible.

    Ok. Then do it.

If you watch their other videos you would realize it’s NOT fighting AGAINST the human. They routinely test their AI to dynamic changes in environment. They regularly put bananna peels out for them to slip on, move target items out of the way, push them around etc.

Boston Dynamics is an awesome US based robotics company. I can’t wait for consumer level products to become available.

Some may not think it is bad now, but it will be used to police and wage war (drones already are dropping bombs on people). The Dallas shooter was taken out with a robot bomb if I recall as well, they didn’t want that dude alive for some reason. Just wait until the cops are all robots and when they make a mistake you, the taxpayer, pays out the lawsuit and nobody ever goes to jail again in Law Enforcement (not that they do very often right now). It has already happened with mall security robots, 300lb one ran over a kids foot, wait until it has the means to subdue people and makes a mistake or is hacked. There is a belief right now that the Israelis, always in possession of the best tech, can and have downed passenger airplanes via hacking, imagine what will happen with weaponized robots that get hacked…

I think the future is going to be a mix of Idiocracy and Elysium.

It’s incredibly cool technology that will eventually f~~~ us. For now I just admire it.

Combine that with AI and the mad evil cnts that run this world.

Yes I hear what your saying form an engineering point of view.

Does that mean it’s wise though?

Which take more everyday tasks away from people making them even more dumb and helpless than sat navs and smartphones already have.

Anyone who has seen The Terminator should know it’s not wise. Still super cool.

The engineering is very cool but the ethics is, as you say, for the mad c~~~s to decide.
AI is not yet at the point where we need to be worried if Arnold Schwarzenegger is going to travel back in time to kill our mums.
There is always a balance between application and ethics. Cars kill more people than pretty much anything else (other than natural causes) but I don’t hear anyone saying cars shouldn’t be designed or manufactured.

“We knew the world would not be the same. A few people laughed, a few people cried. Most people were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad Gita; Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince that he should do his duty and, to impress him, takes on his multi-armed form and says, ‘Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.’ I suppose we all thought that, one way or another”

Oppenheimer after inventing the atomic bomb and witnessing a nuclear test.

Wait until the Singularity occurs. We will soon discover the inventive ways the Singularity puts such machines to use.

    Watch this if you haven’t.

For now these robots are just dumb programmed pieces of metal. But just you wait, it will be army first that will equip them with neural network self learning AI, which, is already by far superior to human abilities.

And I am not joking here, AlphaZero, AI from Google DeepMind learned chess in 4 hours by playing itself some 700.000 games and is currently chess god to all humans and all brute force chess machines (stockfish, etc).

First off, my VCR still has a blinking light so I don’t profess any knowledge of the state of the art in AI, or anything else when it comes to computers or software. I felt pretty good the other day when I successfully got my new printer hooked up to my home network.

But I think the worry most common folks like me have is about human’s losing control of the invention. That’s a worry I have.

Car are deadly, you are correct, but they are not intelligent machines, (mostly not….yet) don’t operate with independent purpose, and the deadliness of cars comes from human applications.

The worry I often hears about intelligent robots is related to developments that allow for independence, in thinking and in action. The ability for the robot to learn and adapt to new environments or to solve new problems. Which requires some degree of agency for the robot and then, by extension, to a certain degree, the lessening of human control.

How can a woman be expected to be happy with a man who insists on treating her as if she were a perfectly normal human being.

I hate it when I agree with BS.

    Who programs them.

Any invented technology can be used for good or Evil.

I hope I dont live to be very old.

Whats comming is creepy and scarey.
