In my last year in high school, I had the opportunity to go to the training center for a certain fire department. Every weekend with a small group of other young men aspiring to join the department, we would train under their guidance.

I was recruited in a group of about 30. We were mostly a group that was in their last year of high school, or fresh out of it, and I remember we were all very optomistic although nervous when we first started out.

Even now, I will never my first day there.

We showed up 5am in the morning in the middle of November with nothing more than a white shirt, blue slacks and a belt. We were lined in rows to be inspected. The majority of the new recruits as well as myself prepared very thoroughly for this inspection, and we did end up passing. But there were others that did not.

Those of us who had passed inspection, we thought to ourselves, or atleast I did, that we were safe. We had passed the “test” so to speak.

We were wrong.

For the next 9 hours we were physically driven to exhaustion. All of us.

We ran all day.
We did push-ups all day.
We did pull ups, we did sit-ups, we dragged 100 feet long hose, we carried weight equivalent to some 70 or 80 pounds up a 6 story tower, we rose and lowered ladders, we did every damn thing we were told.
Some of us even vomited and were consequentially medically dismissed.

I won’t lie. Many of us that first day expected to hear praise for our efforts.

We didn’t.

We were yelled at.
We were berated, told to quit, and given every possible reason to just give up.
They made it quite clear they did not want quitters in their training center.
Quite frankly, the firefighters that trained us made us feel like absolute s~~~.

I don’t know why I continued. I don’t know why I never stopped. I kept waiting for it to be over.

The numbers of us dwindled and we were down to about 10 recruits. It was then that we were bluntly asked, “Are you all ready to give up now?”.
We were all feeling like crap, but managed to say in a disordered unison “No sir.”

Out of what I could have only assumed was provocation at the moment, our drill instructors said
“I’m sorry, I didn’t quite understand that.”

Almost instinctively, our little group said in a more sharp resonance, “NO SIR!”.

We went back and forth, back and forth, but our voices and determination only grew. We just spent so much effort, and these people had the nerve to ask us if we wanted to just give up now. We were p~~~ed, and we desired nothing else at that moment but to deny their f~~~ing expectations.

My code of honor, I think is something that is often made a laughing stock in our modern day society. Its the kind of concept that gets kicked around and ridiculed for being corny or idiotic. You will often find it as an overused gag really in most stories. It’s an old one at that.

But I digress. It’s a philosophy I will gladly live and die by.
