    Hi everyone.

I walk 3 miles per day every morning. I now get an ache just above the kneecap, see the image that I’ve linked:

    Picture of affected area.

A couple of weeks ago it hurt like hell and I could barely walk, no prior pain. I rested for 24 hours and it’s just been aching after each walk ever since, even if I spend a day sitting down I will end up with the ache. It’s not terribly bad but it’s clear something is not right. I can get on with my day as normal but if I get on a bicycle it hurts quite a lot.

Any fitness guys here know what this could be and how I should go about healing this?

    Thanks!

    A quick search…

4 Questions That Help Solve Your Knee Pain Mystery

For example, pain below your kneecap might be a sign of patellar tendonitis, or inflammation in the tendon that connects the kneecap to the shinbone. Pain above the kneecap often means quadriceps tendonitis.

I had similar ache earlier this spring from strain kneeling and working on staining decks .. just behind left knee cap. Could hardly walk. Took about five weeks. Swelling puffiness just below cap disappeared totally on its own and those days of pain are now gone.

It could be anything really. Just a generalized pain like that cannot be diagnosed over the internet.

Did you injure it in some way prior to this?
Are you obese or extremely overweight? You know what, let’s just go with your weight. 300 pound men are notorious for declaring themselves not overweight.

Are you wearing proper shoes and using good form? For walking I would go with a minimalist shoe that lets your feet gain input from the ground. It is the easiest way to tell if you are landing your foot wrong, because you will feel it and you will try to auto-correct. Also it helps build up various tendons etc. that would normally be coddled and protected from a modern running shoe.

If it is a structural problem or a traumatic injury you are going to need a doctor.

Could be bursitis. Anyone at any age can get it but it is usually associated with regular use of a joint, and athletic people can get it because of that.

I clock about 4 miles a day and sometimes more, and I am frequently shocked by the way people damage and disrespect their knees – i.e. running DOWNHILL, letting the feet “flop” into the pavement (major cause of shin splints) etc.

Agreed. It’s only one knee, so it’s probably not because of *how* you’re walking. Joint trouble isn’t the kind of pain/soreness to try and work through – like muscle soreness. Could be tendonitis. I had pain in just one heel for a long time and ultra-sound helped with that.

Try and be conscious of your “alignment”. Some people walk with their feet too turned out – or pronated. Perhaps one foot is slightly pronated or supinated.

Make an effort to keep your feet straight. Can’t say if this is a cause or a cure, but it’s very possibly a factor.

Be kind to your knees. You’ll miss them when they’re gone.

You walk every day, and you also cycle, could be you are just overdoing things. You could also consider using some kind of knee support while exercising.

A lot of knee problems are caused by weak ankles, believe it or not.

Work on exercises that strengthen your ankles and your knee pain will probably diminish or entirely disappear.

Yes, a tensor bandage, or one of those joint braces which limit range of motion.

No injury prior and my shoes and cheap ‘n’ nasty’s from Kmart. I will look at getting better shoes.

To everyone else, thanks for the replies, I’ve got a good amount of things to follow up now and I was going to see my doctor at the end of the month anyway. For now, rest and research, thanks guys!
