I’ve come back to this idea repeatedly over the years but women have usually been the reason I didn’t end up doing it. Starting to think about it more seriously now, though.

If you aren’t familiar with the concept, basically you take a trailer and build a 100-200sqft house on top, usually with a loft for a bed… and live in it. No more paying rent, no more mortgages, just a really small utility bill (unless you go fully off the grid).

I don’t know if I could do it, but some of the ideas they come up with are pretty cool.

I think those campers are a great idea. I also like the idea of living in campgrounds, parks, and Walmart parking lots.

Bigger than any of the rooms I had working offshore for many years on board a Dive Support Vessel for 2 months at a time. Great idea!

    Great thread…
Currently living in an older model rv in a camp ground.
Have gone back & forth on land with a small cottage or tiny home vs a newer model rv with a slide out or 2.

edit: the idea of staying mobile should I wish to relocate to a different state or out of the country makes it a difficult decision for me, on my next step.

Back in the day, I had a beat up old van that I had fixed up with a bed, storage, and window screens. It was nowhere as nice as the little houses to be seen in that article. I had a great time going places in that thing. On my travels, I met many people who were 100% nomads; they moved from campground to freeway rest area to state park as the whim took them.

For my part, I could pull out the camping crap and use my van to haul big things I needed to fix up my apartments. This I could not have done with one of those nice houses.

Come to think on it, one of my high school buddies lived in a tiny little Airstream trailer. I lost touch with him. I wonder if he is still touring the highways with it in tow?

He may. It got in my blood after I decided to get an rv. Of course me being homeless before was my initial motivating factor, but it came with pleasant bonuses as well.

Not a bad idea. Either that or a MGTOW plantation home. With 20 guys living in the home, that could cover a $2000 monthly mortgage at $100 each.

I lost everything because I was married, so realise now that the whole LIE of home ownership and trad-con BS. I have my pension and I am saving for either a canal narrowboat, or more likely a motorhome to live off-load.

Jeez… I’m 6’3″ 230lbs. I would have to get a running start to jump into one of these mini-me homes…

I am not much smaller than thou, and I fit quite easily in my camper van, mostly because I built the bed with myself and my extra long mattress in mind.

My high school buddy had an ancient 16-foot Airstream. His bed was too small for me, but some do-it-yourself carpentry would have corrected that.

I looked at these a few months ago, buying used can save a lot of money. They have the appeal of being functional but still having some comfort, seeing my house now, it’s just mostly useless space.

The tiny house / mobile home/ sailboat lifestyle has some upside. With government needing more and more money with fewer and fewer people being able to pay taxes, I can’t help but wonder that they drive by my house and start thinking “That place is glued to the ground we should be able to demand more money from him…. PAY UP OR LOSE THE HOUSE!”

I’m big on small living spaces for a few reasons, so planning a new house (which I doubt I’d build), I borrowed a lot of neat ideas from these kinds of setups. But my biggest problem with them are the loft type bed designs. Using a ladder for bed access doesn’t seem like a big deal until your old, or sick, or have some other mobility issue. Mainly I’d have a problem with being sick and not having easy access to a toilet that doesn’t involve climbing when already weak. Sleeping on the floor might be a temporary option though.

Aside from the land, labour is going to be a good 80% of the cost of a home.

Do it yourself and remove all of the bureaucratic bulls~~~; should cost you $20-30k to build a 1000 sqft luxury home \w modern appliances and furnishings.

Just have to be a little creative.
