Do you think virtual reality has a chance to compete with the sexbot/doll alternative in the future? Or maybe combine the two?

VR just seems like it hasn’t come near to fulfilling it’s potential yet.

One advantage to VR is the fake pussy apparatus can be way smaller therefore more easily cleaned, maintained, and stored..

It’s going to be a combination of the two for several reasons. ChauvinistPig already mentioned maintenance, cleaning, and storage. Along with size, those are extremely important considerations when designing and selling consumer goods. Make no mistake, the VR/”sexbot” devices that we’ll see for sale in the midterm future are consumer goods. Another consideration is price. Just as a smaller unit is easier to clean and store, a smaller unit is less expensive.

(A word about our perception of the word “robot”. When someone says “robot”, we generally assume “android”; that is a fairly human-sized, human-shaped, device much like the Tin Man, Data, the replicants from Blade Runner, and so on. Robots are rarely human-shaped and sized however. Robots rarely are multi-tasked either. In fact, you’re surrounded by robots daily. It’s just that you don’t perceive them as robots because they don’t look and behave like Star Trek’s Data.)

Back to our VR/sexbot. It’s going to resemble a gaming system with specific peripherals. There will be a “tower” or CPU or “console” which controls the peripherals, allows for upgrades, and can run purchased VR “media” or download the same from the ‘net. The peripherals will include ear buds, a lightweight VR headset, gloves, a genital “cuff”/fleshlight of some sort, and (going out on a limb here) a “skinsuit” which can provide tactile input to your torso, arms, and legs.

As technology improves, the peripherals I listed will be made obsolete as we’re able to interact directly with the human nervous system. Eventually, we’ll be looking at something akin to the “trodes/deck” technology found in Gibson’s Neuromancer, Count Zero, and other books.

The upside to this gaming system-style sexbot is that, unlike an android-style system, it can easily be upgraded and can easily be programmed to present many different scenarios and partners.

You’ll see houses, appliances, furniture, and clothes which clean themselves well before you see a vaguely human shaped device using appliances and cleaning products to clean a house.

Putting it another way, your house or apartment are going to the “robot” which will have embedded systems for cleaning and maintenance. You won’t own a valet/maid ‘bot which pushes around a vacuum cleaner, dusts with a swiffer, washes windows, folds clothes, etc.

The problem people have with visualizing this is akin to the problem people in the mid-19th Century had with visualizing horseless carriages. You look at the prints and drawings of the period and they all envision a horseless carriage as being an actual carriage being pulled by some vaguely horse-like looking machine between the traces. Similarly, when people today think about a robot taxi cab, they visualize a taxi with a mechanical man at the steering wheel instead of autonomous machine operated by an onboard computer, using various sensors, and with no manual controls.

Hahaha so right RD. My worry is that the sexbot would either clean itself or I’d also need a cleaningbot to perform the task.

It’s like washing the wife afer sex.

I’m old and it sounds like it would get complicated very quickly.
