Some of you have probably heard about this already, but I thought I’d spread the news anyway. Recently, a U.S.-based robotics development team constructed a giant robot. Even more recently, they issued a challenge to a Japanese team who had previously built a giant robot. See below the challenge and the reply.

    The challenge:

    The reply:

I, for one, very much look forward to 2016. Here’s hoping they make it remote-controlled so they can really go at it without having to worry about pilot safety!

I am still holding out until I can go to my big box hardware store and buy a Stepford Wife.

Complete agreement here. This in spite of my sulking because I can’t buy a Stepford Wife at Big Box Hardware. Someday that day will come. Oh yes, it will come.

Something like this would make the whole thing a lot more interesting: http://www.popsci.com/mit-makes-robot-human-reflexes

I envision huge tracts of abandoned and/or otherwise unusable land where giant robots duke it out while their pilots – and audiences – occupy hardened bunkers just outside the combat area, with people free to watch the pilots with their own eyes while huge screens display the actual battle taking place outside. Glorious.

So wait, are they building new robots for the event or just using the ones they have? Either way, I’m pretty excited. This could be an exciting precedence being set.

They plan on modifying the ones they already have, as I understand it. And yes, I hope too this sets an awesome precedence 😀

Update! Kickstarter for supporting the U.S. team: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/megabots/support-team-usa-in-the-giant-robot-duel

I haven’t found one for the Japanese team, but that might show up eventually, too.
