US Supreme Court Overturns US Sports Betting Ban. [1]

The Supreme Court in a decision (Christie vs NCAA) on Monday 14th May 18 struck down a federal law that bars gambling on football, basketball, baseball and other sports in most states, giving states the go-ahead to legalize betting on sports.

The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 to strike down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act. The 1992 law barred state-authorized sports gambling with some exceptions. It made Nevada the only state where a person could wager on the results of a single game.

This ruling means every state could be a sports gambling haven. One research firm estimated before the ruling that if the Supreme Court were to strike down the law, 32 states would likely offer sports betting within five years.

The back story to this was posted previously on this forum earlier this year

The professional teams are against it because they don’t get a cut of the revenue that is generated. They would NEVER admit it but that’s why.

It is interesting how the Back To the Future trilogy got it right in so many wrong ways.

Sometimes you just have to sit back, look at the s~~~show which is happening, and laugh. LOL!

No way, he didn’t do any steroids.

The NBA has been preparing for this for decades. It’s always been one of the more mentally nimble leagues. While the league didn’t file an amicus brief, both the former and current commissioner have spoke in favor of legalized betting.

The NHL has been cautiously following the NBA’s lead.

The NFL has been against betting for decades and filed a brief opposing betting. Rather true to form for a league seemingly dead set on destroying itself. Four or five years ago, the NFL seemed unstoppable. Now everyone talks about little else that how much f~~~ed up the league is.

MLB has been deliberately silent on the issue. The league’s current structure came about after a gambling scandal, remember. MLB also has less control over it’s member teams. The other leagues award franchises to vetted owners. Screw up and the league will take “your” team away, look at the Carolina Panthers for example. While MLB has some power over it’s teams, both the NL and AL are legally “associations” made up of independently owned teams. That makes imposing change or enforcing standards a little harder for MLB.

MLB’s commissioner, Rob Manfred, has carefully said nothing for attribution. It’s worth noting that MLB didn’t file any briefs in the case, just like the NBA and NHL.

Unlike every other major sport. MLB doesn’t control it’s own Hall of Fame. Entry into Cooperstown depends on being voted in by the Baseball Writers Association of America or the Veterans’ Committee.

The BBWAA is made up of the people whom Rose continually and deliberately lied to for fifteen years. It includes people who defended Rose for those 15 years only to be sandbagged when Rose finally admitted to gambling.

The BBWAA will never vote Rose into the Hall.

The Veteran’s Committee, which follows what can charitably be called a byzantine selection process, may eventually vote Rose in, but he’ll be long dead by then. In fact, waiting until a candidate dies has been suggested as the solution to the game’s Steroid Era. Bonds, Clemens, and others will become Hall of Famers, but only after they’ve begun their dirt naps and can’t enjoy the moment.

If you can bet on it, they must be games of chance.

If it is staged entertainment taking bets would be a crime.

IMHO, professional sports are rigged and therefore entertainment.

Frwakonomics show that sumo wrestling was fixed. A similar analysis on US sports would show the same.

True, but it was fixed by the wrestlers themselves and not to win bets. The wrestlers would parcel out wins among themselves to help each other maintain their rankings along with the salaries, housing, bonuses, and other perks that came with those rankings.

It would be sort of like all the receivers on a NFL team somehow distributing all the catches in a season to ensure that everyone got their performance bonuses. Some receivers would still have more catches, but each would still have enough catches to trigger certain bonuses.

They make on-line poker for real money
unlawful, while at the same time let millions
of dollars to be bet on make believe sports teams
    or fantasy games.
The legality of Gambling is the same as everything else.
Everything is legal in a lawless society.

A man would never bet his life on luck,
because any man knows luck is a superstition
and a man would never bet his life on silly
    superstition.

I was bound to be misunderstood, and I laugh at those who misunderstand me. Kind mockery at the well intentioned, but unfettered cruelty towards those would be prison guards of my creative possibilities. This so as to learn as much from misunderstanding as from understanding. Taking pleasure in worthy opponents and making language fluid and flowing like a river yet pointed and precise as a dagger. Contradicts the socialistic purpose of language and makes for a wonderful linguistic dance, A verbal martial art with constant parries that hone the weapon that is the two edged sword of my mouth.
