Update regarding Pistol Pete being off site

The short story, the lightning strike took out the ethernet card, in addition to wiping the CMOS, on Pistol Pete’s computer.

The good news is that a new ISP modem is on site and his computer is in the shop for a new card and CMOS restoration.

The bad news, the computer shop is the only non-bigbox store within convenient driving range, so they set their own priorities and schedules.

The rest of the story is the while all electrical components were connected to an APC UPS, Pete’s ISP carrier used POTS to deliver service. This is how the voltage spike hit both the UPS (via the modems electrical plug) and the computer’s ethernet card (via the CAT5 modem output), taking them both out.

He will be taking steps to eliminate any future CAT5 path issues. Yes, this is the way his computer was fried last year but he will be taking care of it for sure this year. Like Pete, I thought the UPS had resolved the issue but had not physically checked out the ISP signal path. Lesson learned.

The rest of the story, Pete has limited access through the local Library but really prefers not dealing with the usual patrons, or the Library staff. Hopefully he will be back online by early next week.

Yes, I’ll contribute something to Friday .. but mine will probably be like synthesized organ music of the eighties era .. something that catches my ear, just something simple.

background music to tidy up the house

.. because i just don’t know enough about those older composers to try that. Could be something rock ‘n roll played on a big old church organ.
I like hearing all the clicking and clacking as they push that machine beyond what it was meant to play.

He certainly has had time to work on weapons and watch DVD’s, however it is hard for him to order parts as needed.

He was on the back porch smoking a cigar as the sunset last night when we talked. He would have stayed longer but moved in to avoid the rain. Not a bad way to end the daylight hours when you think about it.

This would certainly give Pete something to discuss on the forum upon his return. Especially if members like this version of “Historic” organ music!
