Just found this chief medical officer professor dame sally davies recomends 14 units of alcohol per week, in the US and Canada they recomend 25 units and Spain 34.

Government under fire over ‘bad science’ limits

CAMRA has criticised the government for accepting new stricter guidelines on alcohol consumption proposed by the UK chief medical offi cers (CMOs) earlier this year.

The guidelines limit the recommended amount of alcohol to 14 units a week for both men and women.

CAMRA national chairman Colin Valentine said: “It is regrettable the government has pressed ahead with the introduction of new alcohol guidelines that are out of step with the rest of the world and do not offer a balanced view of the available scientifi c evidence. The only progress as a result of the consultation is a recognition by the CMOs that risks related to responsible drinking are comparable to other everyday activities.”

And the 2017 Good Beer Guide (GBG) says the move is bad science. “This is the rocky road to Prohibition,” said guide editor Roger Protz. “I’m glad that in August the government rowed back on the recommendations from the UK’s chief medical offi cers (CMO) and said moderate drinking imposed no greater health risk than driving a car. But the government still supports 14 units a week and says they are based on good science when the opposite is the case. “It appears the CMO for England Professor Dame Sally Davies, was heavily infl uenced by the Institute for Alcohol Studies, which is funded by the Alliance House Foundation, whose former name was the UK Temperance Alliance.

“Professor Davies also took evidence from the Alcohol Health Alliance that claims consumption has increased in the UK in recent years. This claim contradicts official figures compiled by HM Revenue & Customs that show sales have fallen by close to 20 per cent over the decade.”

The guide argues the limits are out of kilter with elsewhere. The limit in Ireland for men is 21 units, 25 in the US and Canada, and 34 in Spain.

The unit system here is, a lot like most other things, pretty f~~~ing stupid.

Can’t play conkers, can’t play bulldog, can’t have pins with poppies in schools… next thing you know we won’t be able to buy anything less than 2 ply TP because its too rough on landwhales’ blowhole.

I think being inluenced by the temperance alliance,and being mainly run by women and working on the theory that the less a man spends on ale or spirits, the more women have to spend on themselves.

me too, started work at the age of fifteen apprentice joiner and thats when i started drinking.

This country runs on alchohol and always has. It’s going to be the main problem for the intended Islamic conversion of state religion. F~~~ it, you’re going to die anyway. It doesn’t matter how much of a health freak you are. Nature will get you. And being healthy, what does it give you? A few more years at the end? Those are the s~~~ty years anyway.

I just don’t f~~~ing care. I really don’t.

Being a member of camra gets you 10% off in some pubs, while in london for the red pill screening there was a pub near the hotel I was staying at and real ale was £4-40 per pint so 44p discount came in quite handy,
if I have had a session on the drink then I always have a few days of it to give the old liver a rest.

What is a unit of alcohol?

One unit of alcohol is 10 ml (1 cl) by volume, or 8 g by weight, of pure alcohol. For example:

One unit of alcohol is about equal to:
Half a pint of ordinary strength beer, lager or cider (3-4% alcohol by volume); or
A small pub measure (25 ml) of spirits (40% alcohol by volume); or
A standard pub measure (50 ml) of fortified wine such as sherry or port (20% alcohol by volume).
There are one and a half units of alcohol in:
A small glass (125 ml) of ordinary strength wine (12% alcohol by volume); or
A standard pub measure (35 ml) of spirits (40% alcohol by volume).

But remember, many wines and beers are stronger than the more traditional ordinary strengths. A more accurate way of calculating units is as follows: the percentage alcohol by volume (% abv) of a drink equals the number of units in one litre of that drink. For example:

Strong beer at 6% abv has six units in one litre. If you drink half a litre (500 ml) – just under a pint – then you have had three units.
Wine at 14% abv has 14 units in one litre. If you drink a quarter of a litre (250 ml) – two small glasses – then you have had three and a half units.
