Anyone check out this show on HBO? I started watching it halfway through the first season and now I’m pretty much watching it on a weekly basis. Something about this show’s depressing truth of relationships and marriage in the 21st century drew me in and I have to tune in each week to see what happens.

The cast consists of a married couple (Mark Duplass and Melanie Lynskey) who have been married for about 10 years and have two kids. Melanie’s sister Amanda Peet is a complete tragedy queen. Due to being hot her whole life she spent her best years riding the carousel and she is now realizing she’s f~~~ed because she cannot find a good man to settle down with at her age. Mark Duplass has a best friend Steve Sissis who starts off season 1 as a failing actor. He ends up falling in love with Amanda Peet and because he’s so head over heels for her he does everything she says and she basically s~~~s all over him. At the end of season one Steve finally gets a great acting job and tells Amanda Peet to come with him. Of course she rejects him for an older financially successful man that provides her the security she needs.

Mark and Melanie’s marriage slowly falls apart throughout season one. Mark finds himself so bored from everything he can’t even stand it anymore. He gets no enjoyment from being married whatsoever that he can barely fake his way through it. Melanie ends up falling for another guy she meets through some charter school project and f~~~s him at the end of season one.

After she f~~~s this other guy, Mark starts to realize how important the marriage is and wants to save it. When they start working everything out Melanie can’t hold her secret in any longer and confesses she f~~~ed another guy. Mark loses his s~~~ and leaves. Now that Mark is gone Amanda Peet is stuck helping her sister with the kids. Amanda starts realizing how bad she wants to have kids and tries to trick her boyfriend into having sex with her without a condom. He’s smart enough to say no and they end up breaking up. At this point of the season Amanda is trying to find any guy to manipulate into having sex with her so she can get pregnant.

Amanda does a great job in playing this role and the character she plays is completely horrifying. A 30 something year old that is just beginning to hit the wall and feels her entire world of being a hot girl crashing down on her and there’s nothing she can do to stop it. On top of that she’s completely bipolar.

Right now the second season is about halfway done. The context of the show is most definitely not for everyone but I started watching it early on and find myself intrigued by the characters. It’s surprisingly realistic which makes the corniness and mangina male characters in it tolerable. It’s basically a show about what you want to avoid in life.

I just got through watching a war movie made in 1943. There was no soap opera drama in it, just blood and guts.
