Yes, definitely seems odd that they mention two people following, but only 1 getting caught.

Also, several employees tried to stop the thief. In other words, in assessing the situation, white knight knew the thief was unarmed…lowering his risk. He also saw that other, less formidable men then him were able to do fairly well against the thief. It looks as though even the old guy had it fairly well contained and the ‘hero’ simply came in from behind and put on the headlock.
