I like the idea of owning a tiny house with a storage area. Since I’m living alone, I don’t need a lot of stuff, and I don’t need to impress people with a big ol’ house. I see myself living a simple, inexpensive lifestyle in the future. I’d have land that’s already paid for, a tiny house, a small garage, and a car. I could probably get electricity and water/sewer connections in certain areas, and solar power as well.

I would like to be in a situation where my bills and expenses are manageable:

Food, bills, and personal expenses down to $400 a month or less. And property taxes no more than $2000 a year. It would be great to have a pension, and exist without spending more than $10,000 a year.

I could avoid spending thousands of dollars on rent or mortgage payments. And no debts! And fresh food from the garden.

If I continue to work, I’ll have plenty of money to do fun stuff, and travel around the world. If I could avoid paying rent every month, I’d be very, very happy.

    Sounds like a good plan.
I think there’s a lot to be admired for living frugally.

Get an actual mobile home, get a deal on a used like new that is affordable and in good shape.

By tiny houses, I thought you meant 100 Sq.ft new York apartments.

It’s nice for a cabin. But I like to own stuff and work on cars. So this is fine for some small things, but really, just not for me. I like to build, do landscaping, install lights outside etc.

I guess some people just like to build things.

Not for me. I can’t live somewhere that is tight, cramped and I’m hitting my head on the ceiling. If I could afford it, I prefer a mansion.

Suggest a travel trailer or nobile home instead. Tiny houses are not well designed, expensive, and have zero resale value. Also consider that your proposed budget may be cutting the finances a bit tight, although it’s certainly a good idea to plan on living frugally. Keep your dream alive and good luck!

Personally, I want a small “real house” in the future.

There are some pretty good “bargains” in my area if you don’t mind living in a small city environment, and can do some repairs/renovations etc.

It would be nice to find a really nice garage, and get a house with it. LOL

It’s a great vision. Hardly possible with a woman in tow. If I haven’t created any successful businesses by 50 I plan on fully or semi-retiring with a set up very similar to yours.

The easiest way into the real estate market is buying an existing run down structure, either in the city but preferentially isolated in the countryside. Fix the inside and f~~~ the outside or adding on (keeps the taxes low). In the woods you can get away with zoning and regulation murder! Before anyone knows anything everything’s changed to the new normal! You avoid red tape like a flame thrower!

    IMHO
This phenomena is just acclimating people to the future of living in spaces the size of a jail cell. It looks like an excellent “starter” home, just nothing I’d want to spend 10 years to life in.

Ok tiny house, but I’ll be looking for location, location, location.

I’m personally looking at houses that can get financed under rural development HUD codes. You get a lower mortgage, it’s new construction, a new neighborhood, but if you look around you can find a good spread of land and get pretty significant home sizes. There are new additions near where I’m currently renting that are two story, four bedroom, living room, 3 bath, plus basement for less than rent on a studio apartment in the city I work. Tradeoff? I might have to continue the commute I’ve been making for five years and am totally inured to.
