    I follow a simple idea when deciding whether or not to purchase a game or any other entertainment product. Will it provide at least an hour of entertainment for each dollar I spend on it. This includes total time used rather than the length of time required to finish the game or anime or whatever for the first time. For example, I bought the elder scrolls games all together with dlc for $30. I have put at least 400 hours into the elder scrolls games. 30/400 < 1 therefore I consider it a worthy purchase. If I pay $10 to watch a movie at as theatre, it will cost greater than $1. If I purchase an album for $12, I will need to listen to it at least 12 times for it to qualify as a good purchase assuming the album is approximately an hour long. This guideline has been very useful for me and would highly reccomend it to anyone wishing to enjoy entertainment products without spending too much.

    This line of thinking is where the term, “time is money”, comes from.

    I use a similar guideline. And such a guideline is useful to have.

    When it comes to a movie, I figure how much I value my time in dollars. And I ask, is this two hour movie with two hours of my life. I usually read reviews of films, games, music, etc, before I decide on purchasing a product or not.

    I always check the IMDb reviews. It is sort of word of mouth on a mass scale. On the other hand, the professional critics seem to like lots of movies I don’t.

    I was looking for something different to play the other day, so I thought I would check out the new Call of Duty game on steam. The following review, the highest voted, convinced me to give it a pass for now.

    When i was 6 years old, my uncle came over and had a really cool board game. He told me it was the best game ever, and sold it to me for all my allowance I had been saving up from my parents.
    Long story short, most of the pieces were missing and my uncle was addicted to meth and ripped me off. I’ve never felt like I did as a child that day until now. Thanks Treyarch.

    @eek

    That Treyarch guy should consider getting into the game journalism industry.

    Treyarch is the development studio that made Call of Duty this year.

    Ah, that makes more sense. I don’t keep up with multiplayer gaming, so that explains my cluelessnesss on everything call of duty related.

    I bought Fallout 3 for around $70 or so I think back in 2008. I played 1200 hours.

    70/1200 = $0.06/hour.

    Same for Fallout: New Vegas.

    Nice! The otaku runs strongly in you. I can only gaze up in admiration.

    Open world RPG games always provide the most bang for your buck. I can’t think of anything else that does that among any form of entertainment.

    It’s all about priorities, and it’s easy to spot what mine are. 🙂
