Cancer center founder’s ex-wife seeks $400K/month as divorce trial opens
Stephenson divorce trial

The lawyer for Cancer Treatment Centers of America founder Richard Stephenson says his former wife “went along for the ride, and that ride ended,” as he sought to limit how much he will have to pay her because of their divorce.
The attorney for Stephenson’s former wife, Alicia, countered that she was an active participant in building his worth from millions to billions of dollars. She is seeking $400,000 a month in maintenance, plus a portion of other assets.
Thus began the trial of one of the longest and costliest divorces in McHenry County’s history. Opening arguments began Monday — nine years after Alicia Stephenson moved out of their Barrington-area estate and seven years after she filed for divorce — because the former couple failed to reach a settlement outside of court.
Before things soured, Alicia Stephenson “lived in a celebrity lifestyle with the man of her dreams,” her lawyer said, arguing that she is entitled to maintain the lifestyle she enjoyed after the two married.
The couple’s first date was to the Super Bowl in his private jet, the lawyer, Elizabeth Felt Wakeman, said, and after they married, Alicia was never given any financial limits. But Wakeman also said her client ran companies, sat on boards and generally helped her husband acquire additional wealth. Yet she’s been “treated quite unfairly for many years” since the breakup, Wakeman said, and contended that Richard Stephenson has withheld relevant documents and created a financial web to obscure the true value of his assets.
Richard Stephenson’s attorney, David Grund, blamed the long, drawn-out proceedings on the other party’s unwillingness to settle. He asked the judge to enforce a prenuptial agreement, signed by Alicia Stephenson, which provided her with $250,000 toward the purchase of a house, plus $5,000 a month in maintenance, if the marriage lasted more than seven years, as it did. Grund contended Alicia Stephenson, who had a high school diploma and associate’s degree when the couple married, failed to live up to her part of the agreement because she didn’t continue her education so she could be “self-supporting.
Grund said Alicia Stephenson never earned a college degree or got a job in the years since the couple separated. Grund also pointed to another agreement he said she signed last April agreement that 98 to 99 percent of Richard Stephenson’s assets were nonmarital. He has been paying his ex-wife $65,800 in temporary maintenance, pending the resolution of the case.
The two sides continued to bicker throughout Monday’s proceedings, regularly raising objections to the other’s statements. Richard Stephenson, who rarely attended pretrial hearings, spent much of the court session looking down at his phone, though he nodded vigorously as his lawyer talked of Stephenson’s commitment to his children. Stephenson never glanced toward his ex-wife.
The chilly scene was a far cry from the lavish, five-day wedding celebration the couple hosted at his 120-acre Tudor Oaks estate in Barrington Hills in 1991. He was a 51-year-old divorced father of four, an investment banker who had recently started the for-profit hospital network. She was a 26-year-old model and fashion coordinator.
The couple had one daughter together and traveled the world, flying by private jet among homes in Michigan, Colorado and the Virgin Islands, with staff at each.
But the relationship eventually soured — what precipitated the breakup did not come up in opening statements — and Alicia filed for divorce in 2009, two years after she moved out of the estate.
The prenuptial agreement spelled out that whatever property they individually brought into the union would remain separate upon their divorce. Though the Stephensons were formally divorced earlier this year, the trial is to resolve the couple’s dispute over how to divide their property, specifically, 10 properties among Richard’s vast financial empire, in which Alicia claims ownership.
The trial was set to start months ago, but Judge James Cowlin agreed to give the couple and their lawyers more time to prepare or seek a settlement.
Chief among the business assets in question may be International Capital & Management Co., where Richard is chairman of the board.
The court case has involved at least two judges, a jury box full of attorneys and two contempt of court citations — one against Richard Stephenson for failing to turn over financial documents, and another against one of his former attorneys for flipping off one of Alicia’s former attorneys in court.
Even as the trial starts, Alicia Richardson’s attorney said the other camp has still failed to turn over relevant documents.
In a statement issued Sunday, lawyer Wakeman said it’s “unfortunate” that the trial begins “without hundreds of requested documents and key information to this case that Mr. Stephenson should have produced based on the laws of this state.
“On every count,” the statement continues, “this has been an egregious misuse of the legal system and Mr. Stephenson has tried the patience of all parties involved.”
Wakeman also requested Monday that the trial be closed to the public, which the judge rejected. The judge has also bristled at the many requests from Richard Stephenson’s camp to seal documents related to his financial holdings, noting his wealth shouldn’t give him special privileges.
At one point, Cancer Treatment Centers, which moved its headquarters from Schaumburg to Boca Raton, Fla., in 2014, sued Alicia Stephenson, claiming she stole proprietary information to gain leverage in the divorce. That case was dropped after the judge in that proceeding threatened sanctions against the plaintiffs.
Cancer Treatment Centers consists of five hospitals, including one in north suburban Zion, that cater primarily to privately insured patients. Richard is also chairman of Gateway for Cancer Center Research, a nonprofit that funds clinical trials into cancer treatment.
Since his separation from Alicia, Richard Stephenson’s attorneys said he has celebrated a “union” with chiropractor Stacie Macari, who is now Stacie Stephenson, chairman of functional medicine for Cancer Treatment Centers. His lawyers have declined to confirm whether the couple is legally married.

Anonymous43The woman who runs the lunch line at my school has a hs diploma and an AA in food service management and science, has a dozen certifications and is never going to make the $400,000 in 20 years what this junior college former fashion model and style consultant chic wants every f~~~ing month.
Former fashion model= has Glamor Shots done at Woodfield Mall in 1991
Fashion Consultant= worked at Lane Bryant on the upper deck at the same mall as the Glamor Shots.S~~~, the girl cutting your hair at super cuts has more education than this bitch.
Wow have lived in Chicago northern burbs for most of my adult life and remember hearing about those treatment centers. Just another hypergamos woman cashing in. Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt – and the list goes on. Message to all men – don’t let this be you. Keep your money and your sanity.
Grew up in DuPage county south of you and I remember this kind of thing even 30 years ago.

Anonymous43I grew up in DeKalb Co. I did a lot of training rides from Barrington all the way down to Plainfield and out to Rochelle. I loved riding past all the horse ranches out there.

This is hilarious for two reasons. One being wtf was the guy thinking she was after? He’s old enough to be her dad…did he really think she was in love? The other is before I read this post, when I looked at the pics, I figured they were both within 10 years of each other age wise. He looks pretty damn good for his age and she looks pretty damn haggard.
I also wonder what his first divorce settlement looked like. I can only assume it wasn’t cheap…why would he do it again?

Rich guys can be pretty delusional. Clearly a gold digger and he knew it – I mean a private jet to the Super Bowl for a first date?
And what the hell is the point of a pre-nup if the judge isn’t going to enforce it?

To trick people into a false sense of safety so they get married, otherwise we’d have a lot of unemployed lawyers.

THE PLANTATION HAS NOW TURNED INTO THE KILLING FIELDS . WOMAN ARE NOW ROLLING CAMBODIAN STYLE .
I do not envy the lives of the wealthy. They end up in s~~~ like this all the time.
I have discovered a truly remarkable list of reasons why women are not necessary for a happy life, but alas this margin is too small to contain it.
I don’t understand why signing a prenup and then disqualifying it is even allowed. Lawyers I suppose. More useless beings. How about she gets accustomed to the lifestyle she had before marrying money?
How about Tiger Woods ex. Cleaned a hundred million dollars. She was a f~~~ing babysitter before she met him.
Then she proudly says “I have what I have because of my hard work, no one ever helped me !”.
That’s the strongest red pill of the day !
Then she proudly says “I have what I have because of my hard work, no one ever helped me !”.
I wonder why she needed “help” to keep her ankles in the air?
Was she seriously that f~~~ing lazy? There was a time in my life when I gave a fuck. Now you have to pay ME for it
Guys just can’t seem to resist the MED (money extraction device – aka pussy). It will be interesting to see how the judge rules on all of this but, as discussed in numerous posts here, they are biased toward the woman. I wish him luck but I’m not optimistic. I hope he’s learned his lesson this time.

Most do learn there lesson, but you get a few who don’t. They realize this after a few more who screw up there life’s. But by then its too late.
Us men didn't start the battle of the sexes, but we're clearly going to win it via the simple tactic of just leaving the battlefield in contempt."
