In 1992 I was designing a bugging system for my parents’ apartment and it was in high quality stereo. To be hooked up to a HIFI VHS recorder, doing 8 hours of Longplay (PAL) “Audio Only” recording.

Designing the circuit then involved building a compressor for audio signals and using the best in low noise OP amps I was willing to spend money on.

The quality was later “broadcastable”…

Adaptive equalization and all kinds of tricks to avoid “clipping” and other harmonics as well as “gain pumping” artifacts.

Getting the compressor to run distortion free was as challenging as building a high frequency circuit.

It had all kinds of RC taps and traps in the feedback and control loop and 4700uF Filter caps in the supply to swallow the transients. (On a small NE 534 or so OP amp!)

There I got to see what annoying s~~~ yelling c~~~s put out.

Since then, I know how to make audio amps sound good.

Here is a picture of the FM tuner I received as defective junk in 1983 and fixed it by hand winding new IF filter coils.

It wasn’t good enough for FM because it only made it up to 100 MHz.

And it was only mono. Vacuum tube fitted, 1962.

But the external circuitry processing the police radio signal to perfection filled a whole shelf next to it.
