My main passion in life is reading. Goodreads.com was the only site on the internet I belonged to until joining MGTOW. Now I find this bloody Emma Watson has started a f~~~ing feminist book reading club. With all the problems in the world this is one of their current main topics of conversation….
I’ve started to notice quite a trend for this type of book titles. “The Timetraveler’s Wife”, “The Zookeeper’s Wife”, “The Traitor’s Wife”. And you know what? It’s really starting to bother me. Are the women really not strong enough to have a descriptive word other than being someone’s wife? Does anyone know of any “The _______’s Husband”? I can’t think of any, they always get a title dedicated to themselves.
Even “The Wife of the Zookeeper” would bug me less, at least it’s not possessive.
What are your thoughts? Am I just looking too far into it?Then Robert the pussy man…
I don’t think you are going to far. I agree that the possessiveness of the titles disturbs me as well. I understand they are trying to make the title more interesting but the possessiveness is unnecessary. The wife of a time traveller or an entirely different title without wife included would be better. They can make it non gender specific so that the the main character the wife doesn’t sound like a possession or second class to the time traveller. It’s extremely irritating.
Such an interesting question and I have to admit I never thought of it before. Thinking now, though, I think that even though the author is being a feminist by focusing on a woman, they are still reinforcing the patriarchy by noting that this woman is important because of the man she’s attached to. Without her timetraveller/zookeeper/Benedict Arnold, why should we care about her at all? It also (probably not on purpose) sets up a framework for the book where the woman’s story must always center around the man, like the literary version of that famous picture of Yoko curled around John Lennon.
This is the Timetravellers Wife. The plot of the novel is the womans story centred around the man you f~~~ing idiot.
It also disturbs me after I have thought about it deeper. I guess the Editors/Publishers wanted to focus on the aspect of how it is to be the wife of timetraveller/zookeeper and etc. but the possession makes it that the wife has nothing else than the husband and dealing with their problems rather than clarifying the aspect of how wife lives! Also, the writer most of the time cannot choose their own title, so that I believe blaming the writer would be wrong. On the other hand the title changes the whole aspect on reading the book, we as readers focus on the view of she is the wife of ______. It is a really good question to discuss further!
Blame? Its her book. How can she be to blame. She can call it what the f~~~ she likes.
It bothers me a great deal, too. Women are demoted and belittled like this constantly. Perhaps it’s a way to show that the theme of a book was laid in the past? It still bothers me, because while the story isn’t happening in the present, how the theme is framed does reflect our society as it is currently.
She’s a strong main character and the author is a women.
I’ve decided that I’m going to stop reading books that follow this naming convention. It irritates me so much. You could name your book something compelling and A) be original without B) reducing your female character to an identity tied to a man. Women are more than just the wives and daughters of men.
Well miss out on some really great books then you stupid bitch.
Women are so bad, if they changed the law so I kept the house, I still wouldn't marry one. I'd rather be homeless.
I think you just pointed out the hypergamy undertones of some pieces of fiction. Where the woman takes the equipment and tools of the man in her life and use it for their own purposes.
As you pointed out, this makes for a very weak character.
I have noticed something with many MGTOW. We are entertained by stronger female characters.
But, I am not talking about physically strong. What I speak of it, personal strength from a woman. A woman that is willing to responsible for their actions and not play the blame game/victim card.
A good example of this is the female characters of the Black Lagoon anime. With two exceptions. The main characters in that series, whom are women, have very strong personalities. And while they commit violence they do so through means other than brute force.
A good example is Balalaika. War veteran she is. She command a group of veterans that are loyal to her. And while her personality is cold, there is strength in her character. When is comes to discussions on having a main female character in a Grand Theft Auto game series. Usually it comes down to requests of having someone in a similar vein as Balalaika. And the reputation is well earned.
The two exceptions are Revy. Whom played the “woo is me” card until Rock verbally tore her a new one. And Roberta. Well, Roberta is Roberta. And while Roberta is nearly unstoppable, she was not invincible.
In an action series, it is completely permissible to have a woman be a better gunfighter than a man. It comes down to skill. Not brute physical force.

Brothers doing it for themselves.
Let the sisters go play over there with their dolls if they are going to be selfish and self centered.
All this crappy is what subconciously poisons the female mind.
And just makes them nutty.

Those anime you mentioned, you notice the manga they were based on were written by men. In all my years of reading women can write but the books are usually far too wordy and they wind up talking about feelings or magic for far too long.

I agree, I would read a Goodreads sight for men’s related books. Only books though, that is what would set it apart from some reading lists.

Ok, so we have another topic of mind boggling importance on the Feminist Bookclub.
An Informal Poll – Positive Male Traits?
Good evening All.
I’m curious as to your opinions, and ideas, on this:
What, if any, traits normally considered masculine are good/useful/positive?
What I would like is a simple reply listing whatever positive traits you can think of, several, one, or if you can’t think of any, or believe there aren’t any, simply reply with ‘none’Well this will be fun. Not
Could you suggest a trait that you consider feminine and good, for contrast? Because I’m afraid I need more clarification about what you’re asking.
Well not really, read the question dear.
And I in turn wonder about the purpose of the thread. Is it to boost the image of men? As in, aren’t we speaking positively enough about men without being reminded of positive traits usually displayed in men?
Because I can think of a bunch of traits that are positive in men, but not so positive in women. Off the top of my hat, “he is a great leader, strong and forceful” but “she really is denanding, difficult, and very bossy, not pleasant at all”.
I like to isolate the individual and analyse that as a package solution. Viewed like that, I can’t think of a single trait that I have ever seen only in menEh? Hold on guys while I explore the previous posts. Nope, nothing about speaking positively about men that I can see. I don’t know you girl but I’d imagine your idea of ‘Boost the image of men’ would be like dropping a photo of him down a coal mine.
You may think it’s not pleasant at all but I think you’re spot on. Well done!
So you’re admitting women are masculine as well then.Any trait that I can think of that is considered ‘masculine’ is a trait that I also consider ‘feminine’ so I guess my answer would be none? Since I don’t see any trait as having a specific gender standing?
Off course you do.
In the natural world, the only traits truly deemed masculine are those which are dictated by hormones during a rut. We’ve evolved a bit past that. Any kind of trait that society has labeled as masculine serves only to make women appear in the wrong if we dare to take on those traits ourselves.
If evolution was left to you we’d still be living in a cave, bashing food over the head with a club and sewing animal hides together.
Any trait that I can think of that is considered ‘masculine’ is a trait that I also consider ‘feminine’ so I guess my answer would be none? Since I don’t see any trait as having a specific gender standing?
Yawn…same again.
I’m not sure what to reply, as the positive traits I admire in men I also admire when they occur in women, and vice-versa, and what about gender fluid people? Is there another option than saying “none”? It seems like the poll is structured to be biased towards a gender binary. You need a third option where the answer is “gendered traits are a cultural construct” or something.
Not again!
gender fluid people? can someone explain for me?
Biased? Well you are the experts.I don’t know if it counts, but for me, it was my male friends willingness to be an emotional punching bag. When they realized that I needed someone to vent to, they would tell me that I could hit them any time I needed.
I’ll take that one as we’re doing rather poorly.
Well good for him. It must be nice to vent your anger on some probably nice guy when the alpha type asshole who’s f~~~ing you p~~~es you off.Well gents we didn’t do too well there did we. Apart from being a handy punch bag. I’m sure you noticed all the posts, apart from the last heart warming one, that none of them could mention the word men without including women.
