These two vehicles are the ultimate in off road survival. Perfect for what we talk about here. This is pretty much a mobile home. Check it out.

For me, I would want something to live in that can detach from the vehicle. Base camp with ability to have something to rover around in.

The longer the wheelbase the harder to maneuver. The heavier the vehicle the worse you get stuck.

That rig is awesome for what it is, but practical on only decent dirt roads or pastures.

If I’m going “off grid” I’m in hiding and don’t want any Joe Blow to happen up on me.

Check out Russian army all-terrain trucks. They make these look like armchairs.

Whatever happened to the unimog-type trucks the US Army had until the late 80’s?

I had two Unimogs as offroad camper. Unimog 413 and 1300L, both former Bundeswehr vehicles. The 1300l I used it to cross the Sahara desert twice. I was once convinced it’s the best offroad camper there is. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good in this role, but they are overrated and too expensive for what they offer. They are also too fragile and complicated for real tough situations. You need way too much specialised tools for it and some parts are only made for European conditions.
One does not need to buy Russian trucks. They are great, but very fuel hungry. I mean very, very fuel hungry and this can reduce the practicability, not talking about getting really expesive to actually travel with it. I recommend something different. Meet the IFA W50 or L60. It’s the East German approach to a medium military truck. It’s not just cheaper to buy and run, but it is actually better in many ways. It’s shelter is bigger, there are different types of shelters and some are protected against small arms or shrapnel. Maybe one does not need this, but remember it will give you also protection against people breaking into it. Best of all, the offroad capabilities are excellent, consumes less Diesel and it can load more. More range, more water tanks, more storage, more space to live in etc. Parts are much cheaper for the IFA than the Unimog and you wont need any special tools for the IFA. And before I forget: The IFA is EMP resistant, not just hardened. It does not need any electrical system to run. Everything important is mechanical, you can even start it with a crank.

A direct comparison between a IFA L60 and an Unimog 1300. Note how flexible the frame of the L60 is. You don’t want to have this in a race car, but offroad. A W50 or L60 will have all four wheels on the ground where the Unimog already lifts one in the air, so less traction and stability.

If you want to see one in real live action visit me. It’s my next big project for this winter…

PS: The L60 is the modernised version of the W50. It has a stronger motor but also a little more complicated pneumatic system. Most offroaders prefer the W50.
