The government derives its right to govern from the consent of the governed?

So what happens if you want to withdraw consent to be governed? They come to imprison you. If you resist being imprisoned, they will kill you.

What happens in a dictatorship, theocracy, monarchy, or the local mafia protection racket if you resist? They will maim and/or kill you.

Same old s~~~, different justification. (divine right to rule, consent of governed, etc) The one thing our republic has over other forms is the idea of a Bill of Rights where you just have certain rights that others can’t vote away. Any wonder why the elites are constantly trying to chip away at it?

I love the socialists with their “we must have socialism, because socialism means building roads (no it doesn’t) and we need roads”. Funny how the one core thing the government is supposed to do, and the roads and bridges are falling apart all over.

The idea of a “social contract” has never sat well with me. A valid contract, by definition, is negotiated by all parties before it becomes binding upon them. Nobody ever asked me if I want to be part of the current “social contract”.

The “social contract” is basically “Consent for me to govern you or I will shoot you in the face with this gun I have pointed at you.”

Sounds like signing a contract under duress to me, which is generally considered by rule of law to not be a valid contract.
