Check out the differences between critic opinions and those of the audience regarding The Orville and Star Trek Discovery…

    The Orville:

    Star Trek Discovery:

What I am seeing about the buzz on Youtube is Star Trek Discovery is getting labelled STD, while The Orville is getting praised for how true it is to earlier Star Trek. Anyone think the are seeing some of the praise for STD coming from the same group that tried to spin the latest Ghostbusters, as a vehicle to promote progressivism and feminism, while The Orville doesn’t have any of it? I have not seen STD, but did see a few episodes of The Orville, and found its human uneven, but it is a legitimate Star Trek show.

    STD is boring as hell.

What’s more annoying is how the critics have to keep pointing out that the lead is a black female in case nobody noticed.

DS9 had a black lead, Voyager had a female lead. It’s nothing new or unusual.

I prefer the Orville, but it has more to do with the brilliant mix of sci-fi, comedy, and adventure that Seth MacFarlane has achieved with it, than political considerations. MacFarlane himself is a Democrat, and has made considerable donations to Democratic causes.

If you enjoy comedic sci-fi, I would also strongly recommend The Lexx.

I watch them both. STD takes itself a bit too seriously for my tastes – space opera, but I still like it. We are starting to see some good character development in STD now. Lots of tension between captain Lorca and Saru vs Burnham and Stammets etc, e.g. do anything to win the war, forcing the tardigrade to act as a navigator, etc.

Special effects are wonderful. I do not think their business model of selling CBS all access to watch it, will be a success. I despise the networks so much I will never subscribe, even though subscription cost is low. I will just download it via P2P. I think they would do better financially, broadcasting it with commercials and free online with commercials. I have watched all the Star Trek series, from The Old Series to Enterprise. So admittedly, I am probably going to be a bit biased and watch any new Trek they pump out.

I am a big fan but I don’t just blindly like anything they put out

I am one of the biggest Halo fanboys but even I criticise the franchise when they pump out s~~~. Eg Halo 5 was utter garbage and even my bias inner fanboy knew it was crap so that is what I call it

What was good about those days was that nobody cared that DS9 had a black lead actor and it was just accepted by the audience.

STD was in post for an extended period of time, so i think even the studio knows that it’s a stinker.

It takes a few years for films/TV to get from the development stage to the final product, so i’m hoping that studios will eventually go back to making decent entertainment without all the identity politics. It will just take time.

I’ve watched a lot of sci-fi: Everything from Andromeda to Babylon 5, even Doctor Who in the 1980’s. I loved Blake’s 7 (British) — watched it a couple years ago — I would have only been 8 or 9 years old when it originally broadcast on the BBC (never saw it back then).

You can certainly argue the writers and media are pushing a SJW agenda — Lt. Stamets is gay (the science offer, ‘astromycologist’). And the media make a field day out of covering his sexuality as if IT was the story, instead of whether the show is any GOOD.

As I said earlier, I still think it’s a ‘good’ show, but not a ‘great’ show like Orville. So far, I think it’s improving, as the characters are fleshed out more. The characters don’t all follow ‘traditional’ Star Trek mores/ethics, like the way Captain Larco left Henry Mudd to rot in the Klingon prison, in the most recent episode.

If I thought it was a bad show, I wouldn’t watch it at all. But I also do recognize I tend to like most Star Trek. He**, I’ve even watched the animated series (peer-to-peer file sharing is wonderful). It’s actually pretty good in my opinion.

Jan: I don’t think two competitive shows at a time is a problem IF the shows are any good. There are enough nerds for both, haha! We had Star Trek: Voyager simultaneous with Babylon 5 AND Stargate SG-1 around 20 years ago and they all made it. We’d probably all disagree about which we liked best/disliked. Despite being a big Trekkie I’d actually rate Stargate and B5 above Trek.
