Just came across this incredible documentary where the casualities of World War II, the worst war in human history, are compared in numbers

I like the commentary at the end:

Sometimes it takes reminding ourselves of how terrible war once was, to see the peace that has been growing around us. So if watching the news doesn’t make us hopeful about where things are heading, watching the numbers might.

I didn’t know Russians suffered so many casualities. Kind of changes the way how I think about them now.

That was really good. Even hope at the end.

It is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion, it is by the beans of Java that thoughts acquire speed, the hands acquire shaking, the shaking becomes a warning; it is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion.

The Russians are a great people. I recall they lost something like 20 million killed directly in WWII not including Stalin’s purges.

That was amazing. I knew a lot of those numbers, but to see it like that really makes you think.

I’ll throw in my $0.02 – the Soviets, having lost around 20 million on the Eastern Front (but still winning), developed a theory of warfare that said, “if you have enough, you will win”. This greatly influenced the Cold War, during which the Soviets outnumbered NATO in ground forces.

However, when put to the test by Soviet allies in the Yom Kippur War in ’73, it was seen as limited. The Syrians (advised by the Soviets) poured huge numbers into the Golan Heights, confident of overwhelming the Israelis. The Israelis turned it into a turkey shoot and showed numbers where no match for territorial advantage and marksmanship.

The political atrocity in which the Israelis originally seized the Golan Heights in ’67 is a separate issue.
