Shooting is a great hobby /sport and can teach a man a lot about himself and about perseverance, dedication and calm focus. I think there are a few of us here who like to shoot.
I have always found that a man’s favourite guns can tell you a lot about him and what he is interested in. Is he high tech with the very latest innovations? Is he a old romantic with the black powder or cow boy action guns? Is he a cranky wild cat calibre guy? Is he a bit dull and dutiful buying what everyone else has? Is fire power his thing or is it flexibility? Does he spend for the best? Does he have a house full of old beaten up guns that he got cheap and is always fixing up?
So just for fun would anyone like to tell me the boys his favourite guns either that he owns or would like to own.
I suppose I had better put myself out there. I have tinkered quite a bit with old guns from a number of periods, often imagining the guys who had them and their lives but that was when I had more time. These days I am probably quite dull and dutiful while still spending out for quality.
This will type cast me a bit and I can almost hear the safety catches coming off from those who hate dutiful German reliability and standardisation but my favourite right now from what I own is a Blaser R8 rifle in 0.308 with Swarovski Z6 scope, shooting RWS bullets hand loaded in Lapua brass with Vihtavuori powder (we are not allowed a lot of American powders here any more thanks to some great EU law banning some chemical or other that is in a lot of them).
I do like the old lever guns (probably just because of the cowboy films). Flintlocks take me back to another world before mechanisation and I like to imagine the lives of the men who owned them and never even rode a railway train. If I lived in a more civilised country I would probably have learned properly about pistols but here only the criminals have them (unless they are old collectors’ guns or have a silly two foot stick welded onto the butt which makes them unbalanced and so pretty pointless). I shot myriads of air pistol pellets at one point (which is freely allowed) but then just gave up the notion of pistol shooting as for those in more fortunate lands. I have a small collection of historic handguns but sadly they are just a collection thanks to our laws.
So go on lads, tell me what you are in to.
A woman is like fire -fun to play with, can warm you through and cook your food, needs constant feeding, can burn you and consume all you own
Pistol Pete the floor is yours.
Anonymous7Hmmmm, favorite…..
I like my replica Peace Maker (Cowboy gun).
I adore the little Ruger .22 Bearcat that my dad gave me. It is a baby Cowboy gun.And I would kill you if you tried to take my dads bird gun away from me. In fact I would probably shoot you in the face with the reloads he did.
Probably didn’t answer your question but there is my answer. 🙂
My favorite one shoots blanks. Saved my life on many occasions.
Peace is > piece.
My favorite guns are because of the sentimental attachment.
Winchester Model 74 .22 that my Grandfather gave me, I use it often to shoot gophers.
Sako 30-06 that my Father gave me, many successful deer hunts with that rifle.
Colt 1911 GI that my Uncle gave me, because he knew I would clean it.My favorite guns are because of the sentimental attachement.
Winchester Model 74 .22 that my Grandfather gave me.
Sako 30-06 that my Father gave me.
Colt 1911 GI that my Uncle gave me.Same with me, I have a M1 Garand rifle left to me by my father. We’d take it with us to the gun range on occasion when I was young. Kicks like a freaking mule.
I keep it for the sentimental value it has to me.
How can a woman be expected to be happy with a man who insists on treating her as if she were a perfectly normal human being.

However, this could change if I ever get my hands on a GAU-8 Avenger.Brrrrrrrt. Get some.

I love my ar15, (sorry pistol pete, i like ak’s too just don’t own one yet!) And my ruger gp100 357 magnum is also super fun. My ruger 1022 is also very fun…a lot of people overlook 22lr but for fun and practice you can’t go wrong!

I swore I’d never own an AR-15 as my AK-47 was good enough, but now that I do own an AR, it’s my favorite rifle that I have.
Didn’t really care for 1911’s either, but now my Springfield .45 ACP is my favorite handgun that I own.
The evil in women’s hearts leaves them no moral bounds as to inhibit them from descending to the lowest levels of darkness to acquire their self entitled desires.

Too many problems to list. Their hulls weren’t built to last as long as they did and much of the primary equipment aboard, especially in the propulsion plant, no longer had spare parts.
They didn’t generate enough electricity either. During their last recommissioning in the 80s, they needed containers with diesel generators mounted on the weather decks to power all the new electronics aboard.
Do not date. Do not impregnate. Do not co-habitate. Above all, do not marry. Reclaim and never again surrender your personal sovereignty.

Sure. They were to expensive to justify their service and like you said parts.
Retro-fitting a Battleship built in the 40s (for those that don’t know, the 1st of class was commissioned in 1943) cost to much for what you would get in return.I’m sure if enough money was thrown at them they could have been upgraded with Nuclear Reactors, Rail Guns, etc. Still, not worth the money.
OTOH, I still think they were badass and it is a testament to an older generation that they served so many years past their expire by date.
Oh boy, I just came up from the basement where I am loading some BP rounds for a 38-55 Shiloh Sharps. Am going to a cowboy action match tomorrow, and will be shooting at the range to get a couple other rifles sighted in. I am mostly into the cowboy guns, but I have a few battle rifles also. WWII Mauser, SKS, M1A in .308. Shotguns from .410 to 10ga. The basement is the “armoury”.
OATHKEEPERS, not on our watch. MOLON LABE
When I think of a gun, I think of your black “painted” military surplus types: Beretta 92, CZ 82, etc. Can you tell I grew up in a major city in the 1980s?
I have a friend who prefers revolvers. I understand revolvers are simpler and more reliable. But to me, they are cowboy guns. And my friend I mention lives in cowboy territory.

There are a lot of advantages to revolvers. Much less likely to fail, less likely to drop a mag or misfeed, and even a failure to fire will not stop you from firing the next round like it would on a semi-auto. They are also typically available in much more powerful chamberings if desired (ie 357 mag vs 9mm) and the grip tends to much more ergonomic, since you don’t have to fit bullets inside them. If you train with them, the rate at which you can put bullets on target is not appreciably different between semis and revolvers.
The main disadvantage with a revolver that people tend to bring up is the lower capacity, but 5-6 rounds is more than enough in most cases. The average defensive shooting uses 2.3 rounds (ie 2 maybe 3 shots most of the time) and if you need to dump 16 rounds to hit your target or at least run away or find cover…well, probably need to practice more, to say the least.
I used to be a hardcore 9mm guy (and still am to an extent, due to the availability and practicality), but i love revolvers and they are by far my favorite to shoot. My b~~~~ feel 10 pounds heavier when i am holding a big 357 magnum, like Clint Eastwood or any other badass in a Western movie. I am NOT saying one is better than the other, by any means…but you should really consider giving those “cowboy guns” a serious shot, you’ll be amazed how quickly you become addicted to them if you do.
Thanks for the replies guys. Plenty of interesting stuff.
Interesting to see quite a few folk mention their fathers and grandfathers. I hate to think of all those boys raised these days without men in their lives who won’t be getting that sort of introduction to shooting that makes lasting good memories. It makes you think there are many good things a father can pass on to a son.
Just got back from the woods (nothing with antlers on showed up). Headed down the range to try to shoot 22lr standing up. Its become a bit of a fixation. I want to win a competition in this but to do that I will have to stop wanting to so much! Practise targets are generally good these days but once I see a few good shots go down in competition, the wobbles come and the trigger finger gets disobedient.
Good luck with the match Knarley Bob.
