Hey gents, I’d like some input.
In two months I’ll be taking a cross-country road trip through the Deep South from the Carolinas all the way to California – on the military’s dime, of course. I figure “Hell, if there’s ever a time to do a road trip I might as well take it if I’m getting paid to do it!” That, and the fact that I have my doubts in the military’s “careful shipping” of my goods across the country – let’s just say I prefer my own handiwork with an insider view of how things get from Point A to Point B otherwise…
Bottom line here, I’m looking at a 40 hour drive of 2,500 miles with a total of 8 days to do it. That’s more than enough time to drive and enjoy the trip on the way. For the brothers of the American south, I got two questions for you:
1.) What’s worth stopping to see; restaurants, parks, tourist traps, monuments, etc?
2.) For lodging, any major recommendations (or places to avoid)? Hell, if you have an extra guest room set aside, I can assure you I won’t be the worst company. So long as I got enough extra coolant in the truck and water to keep me alive, it should be a damn fine time. With any luck, I can do the same trip through the northern states in a few years. Might as well if I’m getting paid for it. I will admit though, not looking forward to California politics – I think I’m going to make some money simply from keeping my head down!
Logic guides your actions, emotion guides your morals. Only you may decide how you use them.
Enjoy the trip.
I like motel 6 ..cheap and clean.
I avoid fast food and try to find mom and pop places to eat. .
Iron skillet is a truck stop restaurant that’s good.
I recommend a detour to new Orleans. .spend an hour on bourbon street. .Iron Skillet’s are at Petrol truck stops. Plenty of Motel 6’s along 20 and 10 as well.
Army or Air Force? I made the same trip several times with Uncle Army footing the bill. Plenty of great outdoors stuff to do in NE Arizona.

Oh yeah, almost forgot to mention. .
New Mexico is incredible. Raw beauty. .amazing.
Especially to a city kid like me.
I cried a little the first time I saw the desert. .
Pure awe.
Landscape is like another planet.I’m doing nearly that exact drive in reverse.
Best cities so far… New Braunfels, Texas and Sedona, Arizona. Sedona for the raw natural beauty, New Braunfels because it’s a charming small town with some great German food.
New Orleans is nice too, but avoid Bourbon Street. Go to Frenchman Street for local music and cheap beers.
Places to avoid: Everywhere else in Texas, particularly El Paso, and Arizona and towns in New Mexico.
Of course you have to stop in Las Vegas but if you get the chance, also stop in San Louis Obispo. It’s a lovely place.
