“US President Donald Trump has touched another sensitive issue, when he signed a law which de facto paves the way for military cooperation between the US and Taiwanese Navies. The move sparked fury in China, which claims the island is its own territory”.

Earlier this week, Li Kexin, a senior Chinese diplomat, threatened that China would use force on Taiwan, if the US sent its ships to Taiwan’s main port.

“The day that a U.S. Navy vessel arrives in Kaohsiung is the day that our People’s Liberation Army unifies Taiwan with military force,” Chinese media quoted Li as saying.”

In 1976 my ship pulled into Keelung, Taiwan. Keelung sounds more like a respiratory disease than a place, and it looked like one, too. We took the train to Taipei and it was so expensive no one had a good time. The Chinese have been bitching about Taiwan ever since they changed the name from Formosa. So, the U.S. Navy has already been sending its ships to Taiwan. The Chinese haven’t attacked us yet. I think China is just posturing.

Since 1894, the Chinese government had control of Taiwan just four years, 1945—1949. Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalists moved there after the Communists took control of the mainland, and have transformed Taiwan into a prosperous country.
I doubt if the PRC has the amphibious capability to mount a successful invasion of Taiwan. Taiwan and the United States are tied by a defense treaty, and with Trump in the White House, the Chinese will not try.
Remember, only twenty miles of the Strait of Dover was enough to frustrate Napoleon and Hitler.
