I will be attending the motorcycle rally in Sturgis, SD this year.  It all starts at the end of July here.

If anyone wants to meet up for a beer, I wanna know about it.  You can be as anonymous as you want, I would just like to speak face to face with some like minded Men like myself.  I am from Canada, and have not been to the rally since 2009.  It’s gonna be great!  It is expected that over 750,000 different visitors will come to the rally this year.  My favorite hangout is the Full Throttle Saloon, but any other meetup location can be set later and secretly.

I understand if you don’t want to for any reason.

    Peace Brothers.

Damn, wish I could go and meet up with you. I’d be willing to bet there is a high density of MGTOW at Sturgis to begin with so hunt around a little and you may spot a few.

I haven’t gone in years. Too crowded. Way too many people, especially the ones who ship their bikes in, which seemed like almost all of them the last time I went. I used to laugh at them, but then I realized they were the ones clogging up the streets with bikes they barely know how to ride, driving prices into the stratosphere because they’re willing to pay $10 for a can of beer, and basically making the whole event seem like “Disney’s Biker Experience”.

Some of the best riding anywhere is in the Black Hills. Just not the first week in August. Go in October.

Just bought a relic ricer.  1979 suzuki gs850. Having to make it dependable again will keep me from taking any long trips on it. But like Sidecar says, a couple of months after the rally would be a good time to travel to SD. I like camping without so many mosquitoes.

Quad carbs need some TLC to idle correctly. I am making progress because it would not rev beyond 6000 rpm before. Now it will scream to the redline but don’t like idle or any rpm less than 3000. I believe the valves are in need of adjusting before I can fix the carbs properly. I owned a gs750 years ago and until I set the valves I was chasing my tail trying to make it run correctly.

    Enjoy yourself BVC.

I was bound to be misunderstood, and I laugh at those who misunderstand me. Kind mockery at the well intentioned, but unfettered cruelty towards those would be prison guards of my creative possibilities. This so as to learn as much from misunderstanding as from understanding. Taking pleasure in worthy opponents and making language fluid and flowing like a river yet pointed and precise as a dagger. Contradicts the socialistic purpose of language and makes for a wonderful linguistic dance, A verbal martial art with constant parries that hone the weapon that is the two edged sword of my mouth.

I think trailers attract them. Another reason to avoid SD during Trailer Week.

If you don’t have a four column manometer I strongly advise getting one. They make syncing carbs a hell of a lot simpler. You have to be careful with the mercury, but it’s still better than spending all that time futzing and tweaking, especially considering there’s always at least one adjustment screw that’s impossible to get at. I’m looking for a digital quad model to get rid of the mercury, but the only ones I’ve found are for twins, which require too much connecting and disconnecting on the quads. It’s so much nicer just to hook up once and tweak each valve once to line them all up, even with mercury.

What day? I’m from the area.

I will arrive on Aug 1, and will have lots of free time on the 2nd and 3rd.  The 4th onwards, I have some visiting to do.

We could set up a temporary email to connect in a less public way…these walls have eyes…lol.

Yeah, valves way out of whack could be the problem, as long as you have already blown out the pilot jet and air ports on the carbs.  If there is a mixture screw, crank it in all the way to seat it while counting the turns, then crank it back out again to original location.  Quick trail fix I have used on bikes that are likely to be gummed up by sitting around with aging gas in em.  You probly know this already.

Just bought a XR650L this week.  Gonna reclaim my youth and get in shape trail riding lol.  My usual bike is a big fat Valkyrie.

Older bikes are so much fun…it’s great when they come back to life.  Have fun Harpo.

Since it’s a rebuild it’s probably worth pulling and stripping them to get out all the crud, gum, and varnish all in one go. Start out clean to eliminate as many confounding factors as possible going forward. It’s a lot of work up front but saves even more work up ahead.

@harpomason: Can you get your hands on some non-ethanol gas? I’ve found that helps a lot when bringing back an old engine, especially if it’s been fed a lot of ethanol in the past.

Older bikes are so much fun…it’s great when they come back to life.

Older bikes are about the only ones worth owning. If you need a computer and a $10k software license from BMW just to work on your bike it just ain’t worth it.

I agree about the old bikes. In 1979 they took a gs750 motor, bored it out to 850 cc stuck it in a frame made for a 1000cc tossed the chain and sprocket to add the shaft drive and made a machine with no computer operated anything. This machine was made for the highway. It is the definition of mechanically simple. I have been riding it everyday. A local bike shop suggested I try some fuel stabilizer/treatment because I do not have time at the moment to tear into the bike. I have it running good at highway speeds (most important). It still dislikes RPMs lower than 3000 when cold..After it warms up it will allow putting around at lower revs. I have not run the first tank out with the fuel treatment in it, so jury is still out on that. I will run two tanks through it with the additive b4 deciding if it helped or not. I am looking for a second bike (duel sport) street legal dirt machine, something to ride while I rebuild this one.

BVC great vid I agree with his attitude about getting off-road, camping and going slower than I did when I was younger. I am 52 and bones do break now and take longer to heal. I have collected some light-weight bike friendly camping gear. Tarps, tent, bedding and mosquito netting. I still plan on building a motorized bicycle and going camping on it. I wish every man would take a ride on a motorcycle suited to his skill level so I could see the smile on his face when he returns..You guys who know what I am talking about remember the first really fun ride you took on two wheels. You came back with that same smile stuck on your face.

I had several dirt bikes b4, but this was my first street machine. This gs750L was 1982 model and I did a few wheelies standing on the rear pegs. This bike I have now is three years older 1979  has aftermarket fairing and is much heavier. No  wheelies on it for me. I will post a picture of the 850 later. Its a red machine. BVC , sidecar, utopian and rennie all you men ride like your invisible. Be careful out there.

Of course I dumped those dorky mirrors and had two lane splitters coming out of the bar ends.

Now I am shopping around for one of these… It has to be a boxer because I know those engines inside and out..

Plus this will be my third beemer and I am tired of getting soaked in the rain.  Way to old for the freezy riding.

Once while traveling x-country I ran across a group of old goldwingers.  Hung with them for a while and they keep telling me I needed to get a helmet radio, it will be fun, so I sprang $150 in the next city.  Okay, so now I am riding along listening on my new radio and these old geezers start chattering away like they were a fighter squadron.  🙂  It was “Red Dog leader this and that…”  “Hey keep the formation tight felix!”

So I turned on the ol’ afterburner and 60 seconds later I was out of radio range…. and that was the end of my fun radio days. 🙂

And to Top this Off so that everybody can call me a liar.  I did a lot of riding around with the ol’ afterburner on.

One of my favorite things to do, is burn across a desert (on a highway) with my lights out under a full moon.  It’s actually quite easy to see the road against the sand.

And YES, I have pulled up to the Road Block… complete with the gun pointing and people yelling at me.

Fortunately for me I never experienced a Kowalski mirage… I knew the road blocks were real.  🙂

    a not so good story

One day while driving on my favorite twisty mountain road a young kid on an Japanese Crotch Rocket blasted by me doing the 6 inch miss thinking he would scare me a little.  I decided to rise to the occasion and started to get the 90RS up to speed and was gaining on him at every corner.  I knew by watching him he really wasn’t that talented.  He did things like look over his shoulder to keep track of me, when he would blast his throttle his bike would wiggle a little and he was doing the amateur trick of  going into a corner too fast and then having to stand on his brakes to make it.

Eventually I passed him was gaining about 50 feet on each corner.  This mountain road has a straight run of about 1/4 mile that climbs up to a sharp turn.  Half way up the run I look in my mirror and this kid is just entering the bottom.  So the kid goes for it and opens her up and starts the climb.  Realizing he is going to catch up to me at the top I hit the brakes rather than have both us enter the corner together.  I figured he would probably take both of us out if I let him have the inside.  So the kid enters the corner, stands on his brakes and starts going sideways.  By miracle of miracles he does not go off the road.  I immediately shunt to the inside and go up the pass and I never see him behind me in my mirrors again.

At the top I stop and sit on a park bench waiting for the kid, but when he finally gets to the to the top he is going about 20 mph and doesn’t stop to talk to me and  goes on down the other side of the mountain.

As I sit there watching him go by I realized… What The F~~~ Was I Doing!  If that kid had missed that corner he would had a 100 feet of air time before he hit the ground.  I had almost f~~~ed around and got that kid killed.

Are there people out there that were faster than me?  Well YES

I remember this time when I was in Michigan I ran across this tricked out BMW that had different carburetors, pipes and suspension.  Anyway one day we were doing the twisty’s together and I realized this guy was always about 30 feet in front of me.  I keep thinking “Well maybe if I try a little harder I can take this guy on one of these corners.” But it never happened.

However there is a joke to this.  He wore a leather jacket with a big 8 ball symbol on it.   I eventually realized that “I am stuck behind the 8 ball here and there is not damn thing I could do about it.”
