Well, some scientists have an idea as to why that is: “they [females] could be seeking to avoid sexual harassment.”

“We suggest that female ornaments could lead to increased sexual harassment by males and this could be especially costly to the number of offspring you leave behind. The energetic cost of harassment — by either avoiding males or dealing with unnecessary sexual attention — would reduce your egg production,” says Professor David Hosken of England’s University of Exeter.

USA Today reports:

Looking drab is not the only tool in the female animals’ anti-harassment armory. They are known to go to great lengths to avoid unwanted male attention, even — in some cases — disguising themselves as males.”

Female animals are less colorful because they don’t have to be colorful to leave offspring, while males need to be selected for their fitness in order to pass on their genes. And ornament are indicators of genetic superiority.

Male animals are the ones with brighter colors. Females just stay in hiding until they see a male they want. When predators strike, the females sacrifice the males. Males are expendable so they don’t need to hide from predators.

Sexual coloring in prey species is the classic example of female (ovum) conservation and male (sperm) disposability. The male is brightly colored as an advertisement of his genes. He is trying to tell the females that his genes are so good he can afford to be brightly visible and still avoid predators. A lot of males die in the process, but nature (and the females) don’t give a f~~~ about them. The female is drab colored because her ova are a limited commodity and precious. The species cannot afford for her to be easily spotted by predators and eaten. It’s really that simple.

Now an interesting thing to look at is how humanity contrasts to this paradigm. Take a look at a dance or high school prom or even a mall food court. You’ll find it’s the male humans that are all drab and close to identical, all wearing basically the same suit, while the females are all brightly and uniquely colored to attract attention. In fact it’s considered a major problem for a woman if someone else is dressed the same as her at one of these functions. What does that say about the more valuable sex in humans? That’s something for “scientists” like this to look into, but they won’t because they won’t like the answer they get.

Not banned, but ridiculed and debunked. If we were to ban it outright, then we become as bad as they are (they’re currently trying to ban all maleness, right?).

No real scientist would take this seriously, or give it creedence that it was any significant reason for the lack of coloring. Maybe it helps them stay camouflaged to males they don’t want to mate with. Big deal. As if not being seen is the only option the female would have to avoid mating if she didn’t want to.
