Bill was $11.42 so I gave her $21.42 and heard her shuffling around for a long period of time.

Then she handed me $9.58. I tried to explain that I gave her $21.42 but it became to complicated for her to sort out. I think once she shut the register it was over. She kept walking away as if she was going to ask someone inside for help.

I just drove away with the realization that our society is over.

That is why they work in fast food.

Those positions are not sought out by those of competency.

Also, math is hard, and stuff.

Just my $10.00 worth of advice.

    Edit to add:
Just so you know, it is all your fault for complicating the matter by trying to simplify it. 🙂

Multiple decades ago, when I was in elementary school, many of our math exercises focused on making change. I suppose that this is no longer acceptable, since no parent wants to think that little Jimmy or Jenny is going to be working a retail job in later life…

I have always excelled at math and such. However, I have been stumped in these situations in the past.

I used to work in movie theatres growing up. I mostly worked usher, but occasionally sold tickets or worked concessions. Concession was easy as the machine calculated change for you. For whatever, the ticketing computer did not.

So when you’ve been doing this non stop for 30 minutes, there are about 20 people in your line already late for their movie, you’ve got memorized the change for 2 tickets given a $20, and suddenly you get 3 tickets for $40…sometimes you freeze up.

Point is, it seems like it’s easy but it’s often not given the particular stress and repetitiveness of it. Thankfully for me, I was bad enough that they never wanted me to work tickets again.

    Ok. Then do it.

That is really sad if you think about it. All you wanted was ten bucks back. Damn.

To be honest, a lot of these peeps in fast food (and retail) get used to sticking numbers in the register, and doling out change. After a while it becomes second nature.

All I can add is that it sounds as if the staff were being poorly managed. The girl should have got her shift manager over, who would have given you the correct change without question. At least that’s what we were taught at McDonalds anyway. Also, I know that all McDonalds have CCTV overseeing the staff and recording transactions, so it would be easy to see what you had handed to the lady.
I would return to the store and complain. Maybe reiterate that you don’t want to embarrass the member of staff involved. Most fast food places would give you something for your trouble.

Also, although you probably don’t feel like it, try and put a positive spin on it when you do see the shift manager. For example maybe say how delightful the lady was, or how nice the food was.
Fast food is probably one if the most unrewarding jobs ever, with one of the highest job burnout rates. As a shift manager over 1 year I literally had over 70% turnover of staff. And that’s just the full time staff! You’ll find you will get a hell of a lot further if you put a positive spin on it.
Good example of this: one place I went to (McDonalds lol) gave me fries that were cold. I went back and complained, but put a positive spin on it. Told the shift manager how friendly the server was (bulls~~~!). I got new fries, a refunded meal and he told me to pop in again. When I popped in a few days later I got a free quarter pounder meal with dessert. My ex partner got the same.

It pays to complain. But it also pays to be nice at the same time, even if you feel like screaming the place down.

I remember back in high school, the Coke machine would accept Canadian quarters, but the Pepsi machine would not…

Cash registers do all the basic math and Credit/debit cards do not require change to be made.

This is the downfall of society.

Doing math in your head is hard. LOL

Cash registers are designed to automatically calculate the correct change. No math ability is required whatsoever! All the cashier needs to do is to follow the basic training they (should have) received and enter the exact amount of money, including coins, that the customer handed them on the register keypad. Then the register will tell them the correct change to give. It’s a built-in, fail-safe system for dumb cashiers. But amazingly, many of them still manage to f~~~ it up.

I’m gonna call you out on this because it did not happen.

I worked at McDonald’s during the 1990s, in high school. Back then all we did was punch in how much the customer gave us and it told us the change to give. There is no doing the math to figure out change anymore.

The only way this happened is if she took your 21.42 and punched in that you gave her only 20.00 and stole 1.42 from you. Highly unlikely.

Sorry bro but this just doesn’t ring true at all….. If the machines did that in the 1990s I can’t imagine them some how changing with technology to require a cashier working a min wage job to do math instead of the machine!
