So some here may know I am a firefighter who has been out due to health issues, been cleared to work as of last week and started a new job in private EMS for the pay and benefits. The fire departments around here are few full-time, low pay and very difficult to become full time. I have been quite in-active on here due to the new job.
First off for those fellow brothers here in the brotherhood, holy s~~~ this is WAY different than 911, “real EMS”. Not too sure if I like the job on that basis alone, however it does grant pay better than any fire dept.,great benefits, and a set schedule. That leaves extra time off to pick up at the fire depts. I work for and make extra money and keep those valuable 911 skills alive. I can transfer any where in the country with this company so to me that is a huge plus. There are advancement and education opportunities too.
The culture is way different, can’t say half the things I usually do because in private EMS, policy is politically correrct pussified bulls~~~. Not to mention most women in EMS are in private not 911. Around here its some thing like 90% of womenfolk EMS providers are private not 911. So their skills therefore are not great when s~~~ goes down. Thanks to the large female presence in the job field, it has been sanitized by corporate policy and is a place where one must watch what they say and do always. The brotherhood that looks out for one another is not in the private sector at all. Of all the years I have in EMS/the fire service it has all been at fire dept.s, where we act like men, and have a good time. So there is a major adjustment besides the vast difference in way I must function on a run. It at least seems like a vast difference to me.
I have a good set up going at the place, a nice early day shift, an ALS partner, we will get to that, so if a patient codes we can get drugs on board during resuscitation. The out come is much better at a higher chance usually with ALS, if they are going to live that is. Most codes die, at least in 911. I have never done private EMS before. So now for the hang-up. My ALS partner that I technically work under is a woman. She has started to hit the wall at 31. Not fat or unattractive for her age, but completely privatized with no experience of true EMS emergencies. Worked with bad paramedics before though. So I have a woman that follows me around for 12 hours a day now. It is just sooooooooooooooooooooooooo great. Was hoping not to end up working under a woman in this job but, ho ho I sure get to! Really so far it hasn’t been too, bad except listening to her blue brain wash about how her and her 2nd hubby are so happy with their brady buch family. That and the, “You’ll find someone”, or “there will be that special someone in your life one day.” I am used to hearing that, don’t care to hear it but oh well. I tune it out thinking to myself, “Yea sure, and I’ll be space Pope of Mars by then too.”
So long story short I plan to keep my head down, run on the road a couple years, move up to supervision and continue on my way banking as much cash as I can enjoying the awesome benefits that are offered. Yea the job is much more boring to me than the fire house, but I just think of what I am being paid for what I am doing. Perhaps acquiring a municipal job elsewhere, and just leaving the fire service and EMS all behind for the ease of it. I love firefighting and 911 EMS but nothing lasts forever. And it is a young person’s job, not that I am old but I have been noticing wear and tear on my body from it and previous construction jobs. I would like to retire/start my farm with a non crippled body.
This is a bit of of a rant(maybe, I do not know what it is, tired right now and a bit fuzzy), advice gathering thread. Any of the brothers out there ever make this transition from 911 to private and have similar noticings? And if so would they have any tips or anyone for that matter. I’ve got an idea on how to navigate this job as far as being a red-piller in a very blue-pill job, I think.
