It’s not a bug within our website. It’s a bug with the rating system which we have limited control over.
We had a problem a while back with feminists coming in and DOWN-voting our members posts…… so we removed the possibility of down-voting altogether. But when you bring and publicize an exploit, it appears that you’re not genuinely in support of the best interests of our site. When you (or anyone) can just upvote posts “because they can” , it makes an up-vote totally meaningless.
By showing others how to generating extra upvotes , you artificially inflate the value. A +1 counts to member. It is a way members can show appreciation to others… and it’s a way for a poster to see that he is appreciated. At this time, up votes don’t really reward a user in any way, except to show someone that you found extra value in what they contributed . Treating it like a joke devalues this and makes up-voting pointless.
This is a direct reflection of our members time and dedication to the cause.
More importantly, a +1 is a way for a member to say “I liked that” without having to post an unnecessary reply. Not everyone needs to reply to every post they read (that’s impoissible) but we can +1 an introduction and let the user know someone read it and liked it. Its a silent reply and acknowledgement.
We can’t just sit back and watch a +1 be turned into something meaningless.
When it becomes meaningless, there is no point in having it anymore.
Personally, I don’t even display my votes, because I don’t want my “stars” to matter.
But even though people know (and see) this, they still +1 my replies and it means alot coming from our members.
If you found a way to by-pass the login / register form… would you really make a video of how it’s done and post it on our site? That would almost be like a hospital volunteer publicly broadcasting to other patients how they can get drugs without a doctor’s prescription.
To make it even worse, its called it “spam clicking” – with instructions to others on how to do it – and then congratulated oneself for being able to do it is really silly. There is also a way for an experienced programmer to join our site without having to go through the join process, but even if they figure out how, it’s not an “accomplishment”. They accomplish nothing, and so does adding extra +1s to a post.
It breaks nothing, but it also accomplishes nothing.
We are extremely busy working on MAJOR upgrades and new sections – and features – to our site to have to deal with fixing something so petty – which is not even “broken” . The rating system works. But if we have to run after others to stop them from exploiting it, it slows down development and production, for which nobody pays us for.
This kind of thing is like TRAINING us not to care.
We don’t want to work until 3AM to run after assholes who think it’s “funny”, either.
This is the kind of thing we can pay attention to AFTER we have created (and finished building) the site we envisioned . We are not even focussing on ads to generate some kind of revenue stream so that we can AFFORD to fix s~~~ like this. S~~~ that isn’t even “broken” really.
