Spain vows ‘all options’ open in Catalonia crisis talks

Spain’s government vowed to examine “all options” Wednesday in a crisis cabinet meeting hours after Catalonia’s leaders said they had a mandate to declare independence but put it on hold, plunging the country into uncertainty.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has vowed to do everything in his power to prevent the region’s independence in a dispute that has hurled Spain into its deepest political crisis in decades.

He has refused to rule out imposing direct rule over the semi-autonomous region — a move many fear could lead to unrest.

At stake is the future of a region of 7.5 million people deeply divided over independence, one of Spain’s economic powerhouses, whose drive to break away has raised concern for stability in the European Union.

This Spanish government is taking the situation in an ass-backwards way. Catalonia is where the Spanish government gets roughly 20% of its annual tax revenue. Catalonia is one of the richest parts of Spain.

Instead of supporting the independence referendum and tying up the process in government committees until they chance change the minds of those in Catalonia, like what has been done in the UK government over Brexit, the Spanish government has decided to use brute force. People have been hurt and the political lines have hardened.

The Spanish government has put itself in a no win situation.

If the Spanish government lets go Catalonia, they lose that tax revenue. If the Spanish government openly attacks Catalonia, they lose the tax revenue and they will ultimately be the ones whom will have to repair everything they damage in Catalonia, and feed the people of Catalonia, unless the Spanish government wants to start a food riot on top of this situation.

I wonder what the Catalonians would do for money if they were to actually secede. As usual, amongst all the hysteria and froth, no-one seems to have thought it through.

All major firms would pull out (several are already in the process of doing so).

Hard border. Currency controls. No central bank support. Junk credit rating.

No healthcare unless they pay for it themselves. No state pensions.

No EU handouts. No Free Trade with the EU.

They chicken out when money start running away… but I think Mariano is gonna keep the banks and mayor company on the run, if that happens Catalunya will become the new Andalucía.

I don’t think currency is going to be the big issue. Spain and having any chance of self rule now that is up front in the center issue.
