I love those mechanized toys.

In the mid 1970’s these tiny toy cars with a coiled spring loaded motor came out. You had to push it down and go back and fourth to wind it up. In Germany they were called “Darda” cars…

But by 1976, I was adult enough not to play with these any more. But my classmates did until 1981.

And one boring afternoon in the physics class lecture hall the boys were playing with this “Darda” car. Sending it back and fourth across the bench.

Suddenly this car skid off the track and drove right into the long full black hair of one our girls… Hell that hair was wound into that mechanism… It took them over 15 minutes to get her hair out of that thing… And we had a nice interruption.

And this time, the culprit wasn’t me for a change.

But I laughed for days…

Wanna know the strangest thing about an RC crash? Your ears tell you the engine is still running while your eyes are seeing a crash!

The further away you are the longer the laps between what you’re hearing and seeing, but the confirmation comes with a loud CRACK! One time a DONG when I dented a roadway guardrail! The crankshaft was shoved through the back of the block and the snout shattered! You DON’T wanna get hit by one!

I had more THRILL with my scavenged cast iron minibike engine made from a pile of engines and parts my brother traded in a deal. When I finally saved up the $22 bucks weeks later (to buy a clutch) from my paper rout (remember those, and newspapers?) I was ecstatic to ride it using one hand to control the carburetor because it didn’t have a throttle, I rode it that way until I got the throttle! I started with the best block in the pile, it had a broken cam but a clean cylinder wall, it ran great!

Susses is sweeter and the glory greater if you earn it yourself! That minibike, my first minibike, I cobbled, paid for, and put it together myself. All I had to go by was a small engines maintenance and repair book, the rest I did myself! It started on the first pull and I nearly fell over in disbelief! I was 11. Around the same time in the same garage loft I was banging a 13 yo! I grew up WAY TO FAST!

Gargamel, I did the same. You can have a perfectly average kid turn into a menace with this stuff handy!
I am doing some late indoor cleaning on the rainy times here, and found an old battery operated tank somewhat smaller than the one in the video. I put some batteries in it,…. and off it went !
All I can say is WOW about that SR-71 vid !!

My father loved to fly. He was one of three as my two uncles loved to fly as well. I never “caught the bug”, but I really did like flying. Doing that with the three of them was enough for me.
