Title says it all – who brews? Tell us about your brewing experiences and any tips you may have.

My dad was a proud home brewer for many years, drank oceans of the stuff. He mainly did commercial kits with much experimentation and some fantastic results but later in life started buying hops and brewing completely from scratch. The results were unfortunate but his palate had gone by then and we just drank it anyway 🙂

I brewed a few times when I first moved out of home about 20 years ago. I had a huge vat that could do two commercial kits at once, so I could mix them up and usually did 1 lager + 1 stout to create a dark Old-style beer. I also helped a flat mate put down several brews including a very nice double-stout.

My main tip is to brew cold – as cold as you can without killing / deactivating the yeast. Not easy but worth the effort if you can pull it off!

I tried it once. The result was a smelly, flat, failure. Also, I was living in the college dorms, which could have resulted in loads of trouble had my experiment been discovered by the snitches.

I’ve been brewing from scratch for 2 years and then stopped doing that because I started going through 5 gal carboys every week

    I wish to start brewing…

Anyone have any tips and tricks?

I am moving abroad, so I have no time and space to brew my own beer right now, but when I settle down on the new place, I will start to brew my own stuff.

Also, I want to start working with cutlery (including swords, axes and weapons like that). Brewing and metal working (just like the old blacksmiths), those are my passions…
