I wish to become a prep cook or cook’s helper one day and I do not wish to go to school in the culinary arts because I would probably be overqualified to do the job. I also do not wish to become a line cook because you need a lot of working memory to juggle and keep track of a lot of orders to make at the same time and not many people can even do that sort of job.

So instead, I wish to become a prep cook just doing basic food preparations because that job is actually not as stressful as a line cook, and I also have a passion to prepare food in the most fastest and efficient way possible with skill. I have been prepping food already with not as many opportunities as I would hope to have for about over a year now. I have also learned how to prep cook with a chef’s knife through youtube videos and also through a knifing skills book.

One of the many reasons why I even bothered to work in a kitchen to volunteer is to get more opportunities to get more experience as a prep cook in general. I also decided to volunteer, because I am not having as much luck as I wish to have to get hired to work part time to prep cook in a restaurant, so I decided to volunteer to get some experience to at least say to my next job interviews that I actually have experience in working in a professional kitchen so that they can take me more seriously.

After doing my first week in volunteering in a kitchen, I realized that I am liking the experience so much that the sole reason why I even go there is to find more opportunities to gain more experience in doing things more fast and efficiently with a passion. I even trying to find faster ways to use the automatic dish washer faster since I am now realizing that I should always try to keep the dish washer busy with new loads every time while I even do other routine things at once to keep up the pace of the dishwasher itself. I am slowly trying to apply trying to do everything fast in short spurts to try to finish all my tasks as fast as possible to get things done, and working fast is something that you have to do in the kitchen.

I use to remember many years ago, that I wasn’t eating very good, even though I was much thinner and I wasn’t much of a fast worker because I was just going with the motions. But now, after eating lots of whole grains and even cutting back on sugars, it is like I have a have a high moral and I just have so much energy and stamina to be able to do things in like spurts to get sh*t done. I am telling you guys, if you are doing manual labor, you need to eat lots of whole grains and cut back on sugars, since it is your fuel for working fast and hard. Eating the way I have been eating the past two years has also made me lose over 40-45 pounds in the process.

So after working for the first week, I think I came across this man hating feminist who was in charge of the kitchen who has an idea that I have some sort of opinion of feminism in general because of a bad mistake I made in exposing a bit of myself after I overheard one of her conversations she had with one of the workers there. Do with stealthy says, just ghost when it comes to dealing with women to the point that they will not have any idea whatsoever that maybe you are not too fond of man hating feminists. Maybe she would still not give you the respect that you wish her to give you for you not giving her an idea, but now you are going to be a target if you do give her an idea after all. The good thing though is that I believe that she is some sort of a temporary replacement for now, but who knows how many rumors she could spread about me. I do not care though, because as long as they see that I want to be there and is even working hard at the job for free, I think that I am immune. She can be very toxic though because that is something many of the more crazy man hating feminists like to be, but what can I do about it?

My word of advice to everyone who is trying to find a niche for yourself. You might have to work for free for something you love to do for free anyways before you might actually be paid to do it or even make it big. As long as you are being realistic with your views on what are the chances of actually earning a living with what you are doing, I am sure that you will make it by okay, because you probably just need to make your own portfolio before someone would take you more seriously and give you a chance.

Great post my friend. Agree with the last paragraph especially. Have a couple of examples of that, which turned into work + opportunities and open doors to walk through.

As I was reading your post about being a cook or sous chef…. ever thought about working on a Cruise Ship? I was once served by a guy with white gloves who’s JOB it was to sprinkle parmesan cheese on my pasta. I talked to him about it and he cruises around the world sprinkling parmesan cheese and makes a pretty good living. It’s long days but it’s damn good on a resume. He was hoping to one day be Maitre’D. That’s the highest paid person on a Cruise ship. He makes even more than the Captain (I heard).

If you keep doing what you've always done... you're gonna keep getting what you always got.

I am surprised that a job like that exists, but I am more of a chef’s knife type of guy:) Thanks for letting me aware of this though.

I would also like to point out that I wish to aim in working in the city and not some remote location.

I think that it will be the passion that will get me to strive for doing the prepping as fast and efficiently as possible to my abilities. But after I reach a certain point in terms of skill, it will all just become a routine and a regular job that I do not mind waking up in the morning for. At this point though, I try to prep cook any chance I get, because to me, it is not really work. Just yesterday for instance, I was slicing apples in very thin wedges very fast, so that I would eat them as a snack later on.
