As of 2012 there are 238,574,670 adult people in the United States. As of that same year there are 9,083,558 LGBT estimated in the adult population. This tells us that 3.8% of the adult population is LGBT. That is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender.

As of 2013, 1,369,532 adults are on active duty in all branches of the US Armed Forces. The article states that 15,000 of those personnel are trans gendered. Or just over 1% of the armed forces are trans gendered. 1 out of every 100.

Even though this is a low number, I find it difficult to believe. Not to say that the data isn’t legitimate and peer reviewed. Just difficult to believe in light of the understanding of just how exclusionary the armed forces is know to be when it comes to people that are not heterosexual.
