Rather than have Puerto Rico become the 51th state of the USA, would it be better if it just became its own nation, so America wouldn’t have to bother to pay any financial support? It could sink or swim on its own. You saw this in a Trump quote:
Donald J. Trump ✔@realDonaldTrump
…We cannot keep FEMA, the Military & the First Responders, who have been amazing (under the most difficult circumstances) in P.R. forever!
7:07 AM – Oct 12, 2017This isn’t the cold war any longer. Why does America need colonies and territories? Why not cut its loses and get off the world stage in this way? So long as Puerto Rico is part of the United States, it becomes a responsibility to the United States. Would it make sense to say to Texas, for example, that “FEMA can’t remain in Texas forever”? No, because Texas is part of the United States. A nation needs to look after its own.
What are your thoughts here?
"I am my own thang. Any questions?" - Davis S Pumpkins.

Anonymous6They are the closet to becoming a state. Only thing stopping them is that debt they have. It’s in the billions i think. They have to be able to pay that back before any kind of statehood conversation can be had. As we have seen with the Hurricane Relief. Puerto Rico is horribly run and mismanaged. They need better leaders and bette representatives. Long story short, they have a s~~~ load of problems that they need to rectify before they can become a state.
Trump has floated the idea of letting private business basically take over Puerto Rico and run it like a company. May work or it may not work. But something has to be done about that debt first.
Yes, go your own portorro.
To those following me, be careful, I just farted. Men those beans are killers.

Puerto Rico is corrupt as s~~~. From the police, to the government… The mob and the drug cartels run the show over there. Which is why I laugh when Puerto Ricans come here espousing how create Puerto Rico is. It’s like “dude, if it was so great, you’d be there, not here.” Their unemployment is high as f~~~ and people are poor.
I’d rather they not be a state, but that said. I might be willing to take them over Texas if Texas secedes. Texas has f~~~ed enough s~~~ up in this country between the fossil fuel industry, the housing market that they crashed… I can find plenty wrong with Texas. Now, I’d rather have them than Puerto and cut ties with Puerto Rico entirely. But if, like I said.. They were to secede, I’d be okay with letting Puerto Rico in, just so we don’t have to start changing the flag.

Its not so much their debt…its that we gave them too sweet of a deal. They pretty much get all the benefits of statehood right now and don’t have to pay any federal taxes. If they became a state they’d just have to pay more taxes and really get nothing extra for it. We should have told them get on board or GTFO decades ago.
