I also am familiar with Western NC lived there many years. If you were in the spot you described you were in the wrong spot. May I suggest you try the Blue ridge parkway–head north to Craggy Dome, go through the tunnel and turn into the overlook. There is a trail which will take you up to the top. (Second highest point east of the Mississippi.) Very few “tourists” know about it, or are willing to climb the trail.

I spent many an evening there in the peace and solitude with only the wind and the view. If you need to find your center that is a good place to begin looking for it.
