The first commercially available hard disk drive was the size of four washing machines stacked together and had a minuscule amount of data storage… but was a huge leap forward for its time.

It was 60″ x 68″ x 29″ (118320 cubic inches or 68 cubic feet) and leased for $3500 a month along with its processing system. Let’s say the drive was less than a third of the cost… that amounts to over $9000 a month in adjusted dollars.

Last week I bought a 4TB hard drive that’s 6″ x 4″ x 2″ (48 cubic inches) for under $500.

That’s an increase of million times in storage capacity at 0.0006% the size and .005% the cost (for a year’s use) in just 60 years.

Someone check my math, but I think I got it right. I have no doubt this technology will come out of the laboratory in the next ten years and will be just as cheap as the drive I’ve got now.

Computers are not going to look anything like they do now in 20 years.

We’ll look at those SGI Octanes and Honeywell DPS-6s and laugh about how they are literal relics.

Yes, it is wonderful how the technology is getting better.

21 years ago I had a 486 with 66 MHz single core CPU, 4 MB of RAM (of which I could access only 64k at once from Turbo Pascal), MS-DOS, windows 3.1, then windows 95 and 98, 640 MB of HDD that was half empty. It could’t even decompress MP3 music real time, I had to convert it to WAV first (that lasted like 10 minutes), and then boom it was like 40 MB. For more then 10 years ago a little part of the chip in a phone can do this real time.

Twelve years ago my PC had a 120 GB HDD with something like 10-20 MB/sec speed, nowadays there are micro SDXC cards sized 128 GB and speed of something like 90 MB/s and zero moving parts and minimal latency invented (still not in most of the shops)

For this atomic scale and quantum stuff they will need to use some hardcore error-correction algorithms, as this scale might have a lot of noise and data damage. These are also made by scientist men.

I’m also a scientist, and hope once in the future the lasers I work on (in a big team of approximately 90% or more men) will be the mainstream method of curing cancer. (Laser will be used for laser driven particle acceleration and hadron therapy, much smaller and energy efficient and cheaper than current accelerators)
