Probably one of the most stirring “sea faring” songs of all time. Visit the EF website and look at photos of the crew. You will see that a lot of them were just “kids”. Every body of water whether a lake, river, or large ocean presents it’s own challenges under ever changing conditions of weather, current, tide and sea state. Don’t laugh, but the Chesapeake Bay has had me praying to God for salvation a few times.

Still the sea calls to all of us men at one time or another during our lifetimes. Heed the call and go…. not in spite of the dangers, but because of them. You will come out a stronger man on the other side in all respects.

The sea is not just a barren empty expanse of water, but a pathway to new worlds and wonders that occur with every sunset, night sky and following dawn. You would not believe the number of stars that you can see on a darkened ship running with minimal lighting. Blows me away every time I look up at it. I still long to see the Southern Cross.

A great post and comments by all, but I have to say that this is a pop song. Sad and enlightening, yet a pop song nonetheless. I still have this in my top 5 song list and remember when it hit the air.

The event is tragic and GL did his best to help, but it is an tribute to another mass tragedy in life.

Taps is the saddest melody ever played. It denotes that another person has ended their life well short of middle age.

There are of course parallels between the two, but there is no mystery as to why the soldier gave their life.

This is a great song which speaks to a terrible event with great eloquence.
