Many cultures around the world practiced formal initiation rituals or rite’s of passage as a means to transform a young boy into a Man. Most of the time these practices had some basis in religious belief, and the culture would tell stories and legends that gave such traditions depth.  One of the most famous examples is the North American Cherokee rite of passage, where a father would lead his son deep into the woods, sit him down and blindfold him. The boy was to sit blindfolded for the entire night, alone, without calling for help, until the sun breaks the horizon at dawn. When the blindfold is removed, the boy is now a Man.

Although formal rituals like this are rare in this world, I’m curious how many of you can identify a moment or time in your life that brought you from being a boy to a man?

For me, I cannot identify a single event. However, the time I spent in construction was truly transformative.  I was a house framer for several years in my early twenties – very dangerous and physically demanding work.  It requires intelligence, teamwork, and an ability to work through pain, heat, and cold.  I was very lucky to have an exceptional boss who was one of the most decent men I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I very much feel like I entered that job a boy and came out a Man.

I’m curious about any other tales out there.  Cheers.

Western Civilization’s rite of passage seems to be sitting motionless in school rooms until the young men are old enough to get out of mommy and daddy’s house.

Agree with the construction gig, i work construction myself and it certainly is a man’s world although it seems on the bigger sites more females are coming into management. It used to be that a site manager or foreman was a time served tradesman who knew the game. Now you get college grads with no trade experience giving the orders, pathetic!. Rant over! Lol

Construction or any form of manual labour makes a man out of you. However at 36 the pain seems more intense and is worse as you get older i’m told. The pay can be good however and if you lack academic skills but you can graft physically it’s not a bad gig. Better than being in an office and the bulls~~~ that enviroment incurs.

I sweat, swear and hurt everyday but it’s Part of being a man. And i get to spend the good money i earn on myself and those i care about! Awesome!

In June of 2000 a 21 yo boy boarded a Vilnius – Chicago plane with a duffel bag and $300 in his pocket. That was a big one.
2013 divorce was another big one.
