How well the U.K. does or doesn’t do isn’t the real issue. Once other countries see how much more they are going to have to pay to take up the slack for all the money Britain isn’t sending the E.U. any more, they’ll start looking for their own exit strategy. The E.U. has two kinds of member states: wealth producers and wealth consumers. The U.K. is a wealth producer. In fact it was the second largest wealth producer in the E.U., and with its wealth production capacity now out of the picture, the wealth consumers in the E.U. (who like nothing better than banding together to outvote and tell the wealth producers what to do) will be leaning all the more heavily on the wealth producers that remain.

I don’t expect it to happen in the immediate future, but it’s only a matter of time before the next high GDPpc wealth producer bails out. I’m thinking more than one year but less than five. I don’t expect it to be France or Germany, the other two major players in the E.U. I think the next to leave will be the Netherlands or Italy (esp. with Italy’s high public debt). Once that happens and the additional burden is again redistributed on the remaining producers, expect the rest to fall like dominoes until all that remains are a bunch of wealth consumers (temporarily) without significant public debts trying to convince each other to pay their bills for them.

I’m expecting Others to leave the union by this time next year, and my money is on France. No real reason, but I bet the French have had about enough.

French politicians are still making too much off the E.U. to want to leave, and the country is large enough with a sufficient urban / rural split that they can keep it in for now, even against the will of the French people (though that might change depending on who gets elected next – one can hope). If a referendum happens in France I can easily see the current French parliament ignoring the results (because they’ve done it before). The Netherlands and Italy are small enough with their own legislators too close to home to get away with that sort of thing, so they will have to abide by a referendum result. But once the Netherlands or Italy or whoever drop out, France will be the very next to leave. As one of the big three (now big two) major players in the E.U. economy even the French politicians will see how staying in will harm them personally. It will probably be a matter of just weeks, or maybe days, for France to be the third country out.

Germany, meanwhile, is kinds of stuck. Or at least the German people are. I’m hardly an expert in European constitutional law, but I believe it might need a change to their constitution for them to even be able to have a referendum. As more and more countries leave the E.U. table, Germany is SCREWED and will likely be left holding the bill.
