Anonymous1Can anyone tell me if the sites that offer free VPN are genuine?
I would avoid the “free” VPN’s and buy a subscription.

Anonymous1Instead of going the vpn route you can go for a vps. You can set up a single, dedicated proxy server that only you have access to, so you can be confident no one else on the vpn will be pulling kiddy porn or something equally distastefully likely to prompt an investigation. If you are concerned with privacy issues, use a server in a place like Russia, or Croatia where they don’t really give a f~~~ about U.S. Law. Vps start in the range of ~$5USD a month and up, but remember: you get what you pay for. Check each Vps provider to see what their logging and privacy policies are. Also, for the privacy conscious Tor browsers are a good call. Tor is an excellent addition to any online anonymity you might hope to achieve.
There are drawbacks to these measures of course, as they tend to run a bit more slowly. These two items alone aren’t absolute guarantees of anonymity (there aren’t any absolutes) but they are a great start.

That realization is one reason I stopped using VPNBook and got a paid VPN subscription with a well known provider.
