Is it safe to take creatine for weight lifting while taking lisinopril (10 mg) and hydrochlorothiazid (12.5 mg) for high blood pressure?

I used to lift weights religiously, and adding creatine took me to gains that seemed unimaginable before. I want to get back into it.

Ive been sedentary for several months now, but started walking an average of 4 miles a day this month (over 57 miles this month), and I want to incorporate weight lifting to raise my resting metabolic rate and also lean muscle mass.

    two questions:

    1. Is it safe for me to take creatine?
    2. Will exercise and weight loss help lower blood pressure and get me off the meds?

I never had a problem with blood pressure until I was under extended periods of high stress and lack of exercise. Though, my father did have high blood pressure but he never exercised.

If you have high blood pressure you shouldn’t lift weights because it can elevate blood pressure.

Eating 5 to 10 serving of fruits and vegetables will help lower blood pressure especially dark leafy greens.

Not a doctor but I have HBP and take similar drugs to bring it down. My doc says two things will help the most with bringing down blood pressure, losing the weight and laying off alcohol. Now, I like to drink, but I walk and do body weight only exercises. I cut down on my booze consumption since I left that harpy of a wife and increased my exercise and now I am a solid 120/80 with meds. I figure the more weight I lose and the less booze I drink the lower my BP is going to be. It’s going to be a hard road, but I want to live to my potential, so it’s what I must do.

To quote a comedian, “I’m not a real doctor, but I’ve played one in bars.”

Exercise is so important to my personal well being, that I cannot imagine giving it up. Find an MD who understands these things. Find a way to keep exercising.

I have been lifting since forever (last 7 months religiously) and I started taking creatine for the first time a few months back. I was skeptical from the beginning so I made some researches on the net (about side effects on health . Doctors claim its actually healthy!) and I found out that there is no negative effects of using creatine.

Im using 5 grams per day every day. Its important to drink A LOT OF WATER or creatine wont be as effective! Also you ll have cramps if you dont drink enough water. I drink a gallon a day and sometimes i still have cramps. After 3 months i gained like 6,7 pounds (water saturated in muscles).

I got injured 2 weeks ago and also stopped taking creatine since i wasnt lifting. Today was the first day back in the gym. When i step on the scale i found out i lost 6 pounds. that quickly! But i have positive opinion about creatin. the thing i noticed the most is that I can lift much more – heavier weights, more reps – and its not a placebo for sure. however I cant really say it did much for me look wise – i dont look much bigger when on creatine even tho I gained 6 or 7 pounds – but its all water in the muscles! But i feel MUCH STRONGER when im taking it. Also you are still natty if you are taking creatine – you can find it in meat but in small amount so its hard to get it 5 grams per day that way.

    Good question.

Creatine shouldn’t affect your blood pressure, but it can affect kidney function tests.

As you know, hypertension can have deleterious affects on your kidneys. One way docs monitor kidney function is by measuring serum creatinine levels.

Taking creatine increases significantly creatinine serum levels. So if your serum creatinine is elevated, is it elevated because of kidney disease, which is common in hypertension, or is it elevated because of creatine supplementation? Taking creatine will make it a little harder for your pcp to monitor your kidney function.

Simply lifting weights will also increase creatinine levels.

Researchers still don’t know the long-term effects of taking creatine supplements, especially in young people. There is some concern that it could harm the kidney, liver, or heart function. However, this has not been proven

Furthermore, certain drugs, including diabetes medications, acetaminophen, and diuretics, can have dangerous interactions with creatine. You are taking a diuretic, which would make some pcp’s nervous. You probably should not take both creatine and diuretics. Taking the stimulants caffeine and ephedra with creatine can also increase the risk of side effects.

Just because creatine is natural, doesn’t necessarily mean that it is safe. Supplements aren’t held to the same standards by the FDA as medications, which means you can’t always know exactly what’s in your supplement

My own personal bias would be not to use creatine is this situation for 2 reasons: 1) You are on a diuretic 2) Taking creatine will make it more difficult to monitor kidney function.

Exercise and weight loss are great for helping to control blood pressure. Congratulations for getting in shape.

    Good luck.

i’m no doc, but I’ve used that s~~~ when I was in college.
It helps to peak your performance, but it’s a temporary and unhealthy long term solution
If you have high blood pressure, change all you eat. Read the book “Eat to Live” and “Eat for Health”..both written by the same doctor.
    Walk/jog/run EVERY SINGLE F~~~ING DAY.
Keep caffeine and alcohol down to a minimum. The same goes for saturated fat and sugar.
That will fix your high blood pressure 99% of the time.
If not, then there are tons of cheap medications that work wonders.

Thanks for the lengthy reply. If your taking a med and your blood pressure is under control because of the med, are you still at risk for kidney damage? I assumed if your HBP is under control via the meds then these things wouldnt be as much of a concern which is why I thought creatine wouldnt be a problem if Im on meds even though I have “HBP” but if its under control via the meds I wouldnt think it would be a concern…?

Thanks for all the replies guys. Ya, Ive always used creatine when I lift weights. I know how much it helps with weight lifting. I plaetued before I used it then really grew when on it. I cant imagine lifting weights without it, which is why I had the question.

Ill have to talk to my dr.

Again, congratulations on getting in shape.
If you keep your BP under control you should be fine. In the medical literature, taking diuretics, such as HCTZ, increased the risk of side effects from creatine. But it is still something of a gray area. A bigger concern would be monitoring kidney function. How do you know if your kidneys are doing well? Well serum creatinine is a common yardstick. And you won’t get an accurate creatinine measurement while taking creatine. Some weight lifters simply stop taking creatine for a few weeks prior to undergoing lab testing. As always, it is good to work with your pcp and follow his advice. Again, congratulations.

Not a doctor but I have my own experiences with high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

I always thought it was just a myth that regular exercise will lower your blood pressure and high cholesterol. I finally tested this myth out and found out it is actually true. The key though is that the exercise needs to be regular and intense. Of course you will need to get your doctor’s permission before you engage in any rigorous exercise regimin. That goes without saying.

In my case, I do MMA workouts 3 times per week for one hour at a time. The results? Cholesterol down 100 points to perfect levels. Blood pressure almost too low now!

The only changes to my diet is that I no longer drink any alcohol. The other change is that I eat a little bit more sensibly. I still eat junk but I make sure not to overdo it and I make sure to eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and beans everyday. I also eat whole wheat products (bread and pasta) instead of the white bread and white pasta. So my diet is a bit healthier, but far from perfect.

Most definetely the most significant variable. I never gain weight from over eating. I only do if I drink too much and dont have a basic physical routine. Alcohol adds water weight/bloat and real calories quickly. Ive never been some “foodie” who stuffs his face. But as a single guy, having too many drinks at night is easy.

1 Argininevirtually no side effects. Have used it for almost 40 yrs. However if you take double dose or more, it’s like being on light roids, so don’t over do it. Side effect is, it will make you more aggressive. Positive thing is its all natural plant based gear.

2 Depending on age, after forty if you weight lift a lot you run risk of heart enlargement. Risk goes up 10% for every five years there after.
Do more cardio and less lifting. Walk more instead of running as this will be less impact on joints and spine.
