I have a two piece ac unit thats around 12 years old. It seems lately I get it fixed and months later something else goes wrong like now its leaking water. I was wondering would you just get it fixed(short term cheap way) or would you invest in getting a whole new energy efficient unit. I hear it runs around 2500 to 3k for unit and install, anyone can chime in with some advise on this dilemma or maybe you have experience something similar to my situation. Thanks
Never lose sight of what brought you here.
A water leak shouldn’t be that hard or expensive of a fix, probably either an evaporator pan/condensate blockage or the pan itself may be cracked. The only other thing i could see is unless your evaporator coil froze up and then thawed out rapidly for some reason, that would cause a water leak as well….if that’s the case could be either a plugged furnace filter or you are low on refrigerant….low on refrigerant could mean a leak and possibly a more expensive repair…best to have a professional A/C tech in your area diagnos the issue and decide from there…..I wouldn’t be throwing too much money at a 12 year old system.
I once had a water leak because the drain pipe for the drip pan was clogged with algae. Chlorine bleach solved it.
Another time, the A/C service company tried to sell me a new system because “the compressor is bad.” The problem turned out to be a burned out relay, not the whole unit. I’ll never call them again.

Im far from a handy man, not my bag, and probably shouldnt even be answering lol but I recently had the same problem. My ac was leaking water all over my floor. Turns out the unit was sagging a bit and needed to be propped up to properly drain outside.
Now my ac is in a studio attached to the wall and drains through a pipe down to the lower level outside of my building. Not sure what your set up is.
Resident cynic.
Here in the UK ….. my unit is called a window. I keep it closed which stops the water (from clouds) getting in.
In winter … it cools very well if I use it ?
So I assume you’re talking about a split-system (usually a Mitsubishi or LG) , where the condensing unit is separate from the air handler. Typically the condenser is located on a slab outside, and the insulated piping connects to some sort of a fan box or air handler. The condensate pan issue (noted above) would occur at the condenser, definitely check that first. But if that is the case, it should really matter too much if the thing is leaking. But if the moisture issue is happening at the AHU, in the attic (or wherever it is), then you either have an insulation problem, or a leak in the line.
