    Evening all.

I’d like to be properly armed/prepared at my new job starting on the 10th and would like to purchase at least one reliable voice recording device (it must be discreet) to have on throughout the entire work day.

Additionally, the content should be able to easily download onto a computer for future reference.

What are your experiences using recording devices in the workplace or have people you know used them with success? Something along the lines of a pen would be ideal but there are too many of them online to count. Any recommendations would be highly appreciated.

And yes, I’m aware of the laws in my state.

    Thanks for your time

My university professors use lapel microphones and upload lectures the same day. That’s as much experience I have with personal recording.
Perhaps looking into how hollywood hides their mics can yield you some results and equipment recommendations. I just spend 2 minutes doing a search under this might be a big help. I’d imagine you want to be stealthy so this video may give you some ideas.

Spygadgets might be a good place to start.

Walking around I am always listening to Music using my ZEN MP3 Player. The device also has a microphone. I sometimes use the microphone function and put the Player in the front pocket of my shirt, Display to  the backside. The microphone is very good. When I have to write the minutes of  Meetings etc. I sometimes use it. In the pocket it is invisible. It is also useful when I have some ideas which I don’t want to put down in writing, so I just record my spoken words and listen to them later.

Once I did read an interview with Keith Richards. When he is slowly getting drunk he takes his guitar and record the Music he is playing while he is drinking. Next day he is listening to the recordings. That’s his way of composing…LOL.

But I guess there are smaller devices available than the ZEN.

Between 1996 and 2003 I owned a business and employed 45 to 52 people depending on the seasons. All official conversations, be that as a group or one or two employees spoken to in the office were recorded without fail.  My general manager and three leading hands/duty managers, all had mini voice activated voice recorders no bigger than one third of the size of a packet of cigarettes. All staff were informed of our practice in their employment applications and staff  conduct booklet. Considering that nearly 30% of my staff was female. . . . it had to be done.

Believe you me, this practice saved not only thousands or tens of thousands of dollars but hundreds of thousands over a  period of eight years.

On the other hand, if you are an employee, I see no reason why you should not protect yourself by having one at work. If your employer or leading hand say you should not or insinuate that it may not be a good idea, they do not have your interests at heart so to speak. Have it, use it regardless of what the law says. Evidence is evidence, like ownership of an item it is nine tenths of the law, however that law may be interpreted. Your best defence.

I like the MP3 player idea, since it is disguised as harmless entertainment. Your smartphone can record and store it instantly on the cloud and out of their reach, and they won’t look twice at a cell phone.

I see no reason why you should not have a recorder handy. After all, they are most likely snooping on you. You have no right to privacy from your employer’s intrusions while on the job, or while using their equipment on your personal time. (Did they give you a laptop or phone?) This is a well established legal precedent. Even your personal cell phone may be monitored with the court’s permission if you use it on company grounds — that goes double if you use the company wifi to save yourself cell minutes.

Society asks MGTOWs: Why are you not making more tax-slaves?
