I plugged it in the other day for the first time in years. There were no signs of problems before but it is no longer reading DVD’s nor will it allow me to change some of the system settings. I opened it up and tried cleaning it to no avail.

I’m debating whether to find a used one somewhere…or go the emulator route. I downloaded an emulator program known as PCSX but it requires extracting the BIOS from a modded PS2. The process looks like a pain in the ass. Is there a better/more user friendly emulator for the PS2 or would this be my only choice? Perhaps I should get another unit instead. It’s too bad that the newer Playstations are not backwards compatible.

It would be cheap to replace it but emulators are free.

The last time I used an PS2 emulator it wasn’t very good and few games would play however that was many years ago and I’m sure they have made improvements.

I can’t remember what I used but I use PSX for the PS1 and it works great, so if they have a similar one for PS2 I’m sure it will work fine.

With emulators sometimes you need to mess around with a bunch of stuff to get things to work, and while emulators themselves are legal the ROMs for them are not and you may need to patch a few to bypass certain anti piracy things that could make the games unplayable.

So really if you just want to play the games you have, go buy another one. But if you want to play games you don’t have or don’t work anymore then emulator is the way to go.

I’m on my phone right now soy responses are a bit sloppy but I remember using PCSX myself and had to extract the BIOS. it wasn’t very complicated as I recall. Just download the BIOS from a site and then move the files to the proper location.

I believe I watched a step by step YouTube video. I would start there.

I’ll have a look when I get home. Cuz I definitely still have mine on my computer, as I was playing kingdom hearts 1 and 2 on it about a year ago.

Many emulators come without the required bios files. It’s a legal issue. They can be easily found online though.

If you own the game discs and you own the game player, and you are not pirating anything, I do not see any ethical problems in using an emulator.

Emulators suck, if you’re dead set on not upgrading to a PS4 or something, just get yourself a used ps2.

WIth an emulator you’ll need to get the BIOS, you’ll need to download DVD copies which are illegal if you care about such things and then you need to futz with the emulator to make it work properly with each game you try and not all games will work.

Just getting another PS2 is by far the simplest solution to the problem.

Oh I totally agree. Emulators are awesome. I really like playing ROM hacks of various games that I enjoyed as a youth. Very seldom do companies give cease and desist orders for fan made ROM hacks but it has happened.

I know I contradicted myself earlier by saying I hadn’t used one in years and then said I played KH sometime last year, but I had just forgotten about that.

The First time I tried using a PS2 Emulator I was trying to play FFX and the dark cloud games but they ran like crap and barely worked.

I wanted to play the Japanese exclusive Kingdom heart games that had extra Content, such as hidden bosses, however they were only released in Japan and were not localized in English, but I found out they had an English translation patch for the ROM and started trying to get a PS2 emulator to work again.

I just started it back up and it works fine. It really shouldn’t be that complicated to get working. Less than 10 minutes to set up. Here is one of many tutorial videos.

Can’t you replace the part that broke from another PS? Maybe buy a broken one off Craigslist? Sounds like a good time to upgrade…..

Hey man. I am selling my PS4. I believe it is the 500gb version. I will throw in Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2. I know it sounds ridiculous, but I absolutely love that game. You will have to buy your own controller though, mine is a bit wonky. Shoot me a message if interested. I shall include the power cord for the system as well as the cord for the controller as well as the game on disc. I will do a fully system initialization before shipping it off to you.

    Just let me know,

Why not get a back compatible PS3 (20, 60 or 80GB)? You can play PS3 games, PS2 discs, DVDs, Blu-Rays and download PS1 games. You can create all the memory cards you want.

Even though I have a PS4 system now, I’m still keeping my PS3 so I can still play the older games. My PS3 is the 20GB model with a 120GB hard drive upgrade (installed myself) and I have all the games I’m ever going to want on it.

but it requires extracting the BIOS from a modded PS2.

You own a console and the system has been out of production for years. So what I would suggest doing is either buying an original ps3 with native backwards compatibility and rebuilding it.
Or just download the BIOS, since you already own a console this is less than objectionable.

I think it’s the laser but I’m not 100% sure. I don’t have a solder gun nor have I done any soldering before. If it doesn’t work then I’ll be out some money and time…although the part seems pretty inexpensive.

Just noticed that Gamestop used to carry a refurbished PS2 for $50:

I’d hate to throw it out if it’s a simple fix. Hard to believe I’ve had mine for 16 years already, it doesn’t seem like all that long ago that the PS2 was on the cutting edge lol.

I didn’t realize that they made PS3’s that were backwards compatible. I have a PS3 but it is not backwards compatible. Are there any PS4’s that are backwards compatible?

What do you all think of the PS4 btw? Is it much of an improvement over a PS3? I did notice that some PS2 games can be downloaded onto it.
