    Hello fellows and gentlemen.

    Is anybody here on the paleo diet? I’m not on any special diet right now but I’m thinking of going paleo.

    Has anyone here gone plaeo? Has it improved your life?

    I wouldn’t say I eat paleo… Really, I just avoid sugar and simple carbs whenever possible, except cheat days (which I do once a week or two weeks). So some of the tenets are similar.

    I’m 6’0″, and I went from 240 to 190 and have maintained that weight between 185 and 195 for 3 years now eating this way.

    I eat protein (chicken, lean beef, dairy, or homemade shakes) and vegetables at pretty much every meal (broccoli, spinach, green beans, peas, corn, carrots mostly). I eat every 3-4 hours, which depending on the meal and what workouts I will do that day, ranges between 300-600 calories.

    It really has changed my life because now I have complete control over how my body looks and feels. My body feels amazing… I never feel hungry, and I never feel full/bloated/gross, always full of energy… I no longer get that “2:30 feeling”. It actually cut my food bill in half also… steam-in-bag vegetables are cheap and it doesn’t get any easier to prepare than throwing it in the microwave for a few minutes 🙂

    If you’re accustomed to eating a lot of processed food, simple carbs and sugars, the first two weeks are the most difficult while your body acclimates. But once you’re over that hump it gets much easier, and you really see and feel results. From that point, you won’t want to really go back. That said, I recommend and stand by the occasional cheat day because life is short and food is amazing. Eating smaller meals more frequently during the day is also key as it keeps your blood sugar stable, keeping your metabolism and energy in gear.

    If you’re looking for an example of something that isn’t quite paleo but definitely gets results, not just in terms of looks but more importantly in how your mind and body feel, take a look at the link below. I’m not a seafood guy, but you can replace those with other protein sources.

    Hope this helps!

    The immediate thought is lots of nuts, veggies and a bit of meat. Now I know modern humans don’t eat a lot of nuts and a plentitude of meat, but I don’t see the real deal, other than minimizing on salts, potatoes and sugars.

    I personally already cut back on salts and sugars, but I eat as much meat as I want to and add lettuce to almost any diet. I also have a basic schedule of what I eat on an average week, and this is an example of this week:

    – monday: (eat at parents, turns out to be pea soup, which is awesome, look up “snert” or “erwtensoep”);
    – tuesday: tagliatelli, salmon, “stir fry vegetables”, green curry sauce with coconut milk (pretty common in asian countries, literally translated from “roerbakgroente”);
    – wednesday: boiled potatoes with spinach and a sausage;
    – thursday: rice, green beans, chicken;
    – friday: spaghetti;
    – saturday: “uitsmijter”, basically 2 or 3 slices of bread with ham and egg;
    – sunday: soup wih bread.

    Your biggest enemy is sugar. They add sugar to everything. They even put sugar in ketchup. Grrrr.

    I mainly eat meat in my meals. I add vegetables only during dinner time unless I have a soup for lunch.

    I may or may not end up going on a paleo diet by next year.

    I’ve gone as paleo as I could. You eventually start eating EVERYTHING because your body thinks it needs more empty calories. I know a friend who said he was consuming around 12,000 calories a day and not working out.

    That being said, I believe it is one of the healthiest diets you can be on. As long as you are getting the calories you need, you should be find.

    I didn’t cut all sugar out, as I drink almond milk, but that was about it. I loved that diet. As soon as I have more money, I’m going back to it.

    I did the ketogenic diet for six weeks… ultimately I spent too much time trying to measure out the ideal balance of fat, protein and carbohydrates and finally gave it up.

    Getting enough fat in my diet was an enormous challenge, as was keeping the percentage of carbohydrates low. A single serving of spinach would push me over the limit and I love green vegetables.

    So now I have a relatively healthy diet that is big on leafy greens (kale, spinach and cabbage), followed by as much eggs and meats as I can consume (for fats, proteins and cholesterol) and wrapped up by a small amount of nuts and stone fruits.

    I’ve overcome my reliance on breads and pastas (Italian!) so now my real challenge is dairy. Cheese and whole milk have the fats I want and damn are they good. Shifting to milk-free coffee drinks will be a big part of that and simply not getting cheese any more will solve the issue.

    Ideally I’d like to be strict paleo whole food… no isolates, no supplements, no processed and nothing I couldn’t point to and identify from across the room. Leafy greens, fatty meats, stone fruit and nuts. Is there anything else I should be considering as a regular component in a good paleo diet?

    If the diet has a name, there’s nothing to gain.

    If you want to loose weight expend more than you consume. If you want to gain do the opposite. It takes time for the body to adjust and to loose weight.

    The best way to tackle this and learn about what food has what benefit is through logging daily. Apps like myfitnesspal are free and allow you track food as well as the metrics behind them. Start logging what you currently eat to get an idea of where you stand. Then make cuts gradually in your diet.

    Also a fitness tracker would go a long way in helping you get a feel for how many calories you’re expending.

    I thought what I'd do was I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes...or should I?

    Some paleo eaters are really into intermittent fasting, but as far as the food itself goes, you have identified what I’ve always understood to be the paleo diet.

    I’ve played around with all sorts of diets. The one thing I highly recommend is to consume as much omega-3 fats as possible!

    Coconut oil, olive oil, grass fed butter or ghee. Grass fed meats, wild fish, sardines, beans, nuts, etc etc.

    Benefits include noticeable increases in energy, testosterone, cognitive ability, etc.
